Ethereum vs Solana: Which Wins When Wall Street Moves Stocks On-Chain?

Wall Street is moving toward 24-hour on-chain stock trading, and the SEC roundtable on September 17 puts Ethereum and Solana on a collision course for the biggest infrastructure contract in financial history.

This post may contain links from our sponsors and affiliates, and Flywheel Publishing may receive compensation for actions taken through them.

The SEC will host BlackRock, Nasdaq, NYSE and Robinhood on September 17, 2026, for a roundtable on 24-hour stock trading, putting blockchain infrastructure back in focus as Wall Street explores how listed assets could trade around the clock. Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH)and Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) are already competing for that role, but they offer different advantages: Solana delivers higher transaction volume, while Ethereum has deeper institutional adoption.

That competition comes as ETH trades near $2,403 and SOL at $97.26. Both have pulled back over the past week, with ETH down 2.64% and SOL down 4.3%, but their 30-day gains remain strong at roughly 26% and 28%, respectively If Wall Street moves listed stocks on-chain, those differences could shape which network gets the business

SEC Roundtable on September 17, 2026: What to Watch For

The SEC’s September 17 roundtable comes two weeks after its proposal to modernize transfer-agent rules, which would update the framework for electronic recordkeeping and blockchain technology in securities transfers. The roundtable itself is broader, covering exchange and broker-dealer readiness, settlement, liquidity, resiliency and the infrastructure needed for near-continuous trading.

The private sector is already building around that shift. Nasdaq Ventures agreed to invest $100 million in Kraken parent Payward on September 10, while Nasdaq and Payward are developing a tokenized-equity framework targeted for launch in Q2 2027.

Neither the roundtable nor the transfer-agent proposal selects Ethereum or Solana, so the important signal will be what the SEC and market participants identify as necessary for 24-hour, on-chain trading. Requirements around settlement speed, fees, custody, surveillance, and operational resilience could favor different blockchain architectures, making the regulatory language that follows the 60-day comment period more consequential than the September 17 meeting itself.

Solana’s Edge: $465 Million in Tokenized Stocks

Solana has $465 million in tokenized stocks on-chain, with Galaxy Digital also tokenizing its own shares on the network. It led all blockchains in tokenized-equity volume and ranked first for real-world-asset inflows in August, attracting $229 million. Transaction fees remain below a cent, and blocks settle in roughly 350 milliseconds, giving the network the speed and cost profile markets need to operate around the clock.

Regulatory positioning adds another piece to the case. On September 5, the SEC identified SOL as acore ETF asset, placing it in the same regulatory category as Bitcoin and Ethereum. That recognition does not guarantee that a future Nasdaq-listed product will use Solana, but it removes one potential hurdle for institutions considering the network.

The market has yet to price in that progress. SOL closed at $96.93 on September 15 after reaching $110.65 intraday on August 27, leaving the token well below its recent high despite the growth in tokenized assets and its regulatory recognition.

Solana also has a weakness that the tokenized-stock figures do not capture. TVL across its apps has fallen to $5.5 billion, roughly half its previous $11.5 billion level. Much of the network’s historic activity came from memecoin trading, while institutional markets need deeper, more durable liquidity, custody, and settlement infrastructure. High trading volume can prove that a network can process transactions, but it does not by itself prove that the network can support a regulated market for listed stocks.

How Ethereum Could Benefit From Rules Favoring Institutional Crypto

Ethereum already has deep ties to the institutions shaping the September 17 roundtable. Robinhood’s blockchain is anEthereum layer 2, Circle’s Arc is built around Ethereum-compatible infrastructure, and BlackRock’s BUIDL tokenized money-market fund launched on Ethereum.

That track record gives Ethereum an established path for institutions moving regulated assets on-chain. BUIDL’s presence on Ethereum gives compliance teams a proven institutional example, while Ethereum also offers deep DeFi liquidity, broad custodian support, and years of transaction history. Those factors could carry more weight if new rules focus on custody, settlement, auditability, and operational resilience.

Ethereum does have some recent weaknesses. The network recorded $453 million in real-world-asset outflows in August 2026, the largest decline among major chains, with much of that capital moving to Solana. Glamsterdam, Ethereum’s next major protocol upgrade, has also been pushed into Q4 2026, leaving Solana’s speed and cost advantages largely unchallenged on the performance side for the rest of the year.

Which Chain Wins the First Nasdaq Stock On-Chain?

Ethereum has the stronger institutional case because BlackRock, Robinhood, and other major financial players already use Ethereum-based infrastructure. Solana leads tokenized-equity activity, but custody depth and operating history could carry more weight than 90-day volume when the SEC evaluates a network for regulated securities.

That could change if a Nasdaq-listed stock launches on Solana before Q2 2027. A live stock settlement on Solana would give the network a real institutional track record, while sustained Ethereum outflows and further delays to Glamsterdam would add pressure to its existing advantage.
