Key Insights
- Blockstream says about 3,400 Bitcoin crypto, or 85% of the stolen funds, has been returned.
- Around 598.5 BTC is still outstanding as Blockstream rejects any ransom payment.
- Blockstream plans lawful recovery efforts involving authorities, exchanges, and forensic specialists.
Blockstream has rejected a ransom demand tied to the recent Bitcoin crypto theft from the Liquid Network. The company says about 3,400 BTC, or roughly 85% of the stolen funds, has already been returned. However, around 598.5 BTC is still outstanding. Blockstream says it will not pay for the recovery of Bitcoin taken without authorization.
The dispute follows an unusual public exchange between Blockstream and those responsible for moving roughly 4,000 BTC from Liquid. Earlier communications described the group as white-hat actors. However, Blockstream now says withholding stolen funds while demanding payment does not qualify as responsible disclosure.
Bitcoin Crypto Dispute Shifts Toward Legal Recovery
Blockstream said it had engaged in good faith to secure the return of user funds. However, the company rejected the terms attached to the remaining Bitcoin.
According to Blockstream, paying a ransom would create an unacceptable precedent for developers of open-ch that would impose recovery costs on users

Instead, Blockstream plans to pursue lawful recovery channels if the remaining funds do not return. Those efforts could involve law enforcement, exchanges, service providers, and forensic specialists.
The company also pointed to Bitcoin’s public transaction history. Blockstream said blockchain records provide evidence that investigators can use when tracing transferred assets.
Meanwhile, Blockstream thanked developers and security teams that helped identify and patch weaknesses across related systems. It also said teams had assisted affected users during the incident.
A citizen journalist later challenged Blockstream’s description of the dispute as a defense of Bitcoin principles. The commentator argued that Liquid should be treated separately from Bitcoin itself.
According to that view, Liquid operates as a federated sidechain rather than the Bitcoin base network. The commentator also pointed to Liquid’s institutional positioning and federation structure.
The same commentary focused on Elements accepting unbacked L-BTC while the federation released BTC from reserves. The writer characterized the event as a sidechain solvency problem following a patch-and-deploy failure.
Additionally, the commentator said Blockstream should provide greater accountability for the technical failure. However, the same post acknowledged that returning 3,400 BTC reduced the potential impact on users.
The citizen journalist also referred to the actors as former white hats who later became criminals. That description reflects the commentator’s characterization rather than a legal determination presented in the supplied information.
September 7 Messages Show Earlier Return Agreement
The current standoff follows earlier communications on September 7. At that time, the actors said they intended to return roughly 4,000 BTC after Blockstream fixed the vulnerability.
The negotiation occurred publicly through Bitcoin OP_RETURN messages. Initially, the group offered to return most of the transferred Bitcoin.
However, they later asked Blockstream to patch the bug before any funds were moved back. Their message said the chain still faced risk under the latest software version.
The actors also sent Blockstream encrypted technical details about the vulnerability. That information formed part of the public exchange surrounding the incident.
The company later said bridge nodes had received patches and that returning the funds was safe. Blockstream now insists that any further withholding tied to payment demands constitutes theft rather than white-hat activity.
The company has left open one path for resolving the dispute without escalation. Blockstream says the remaining Bitcoin can still be returned voluntarily before broader recovery efforts proceed.
