ChatGPT picked a winner when we forced it to choose between XRP and <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/coinbase-ceo-sees-bitcoin-at-400000-but-first-it-has-to-clear-81000/” title=”Coinbase CEO sees Bitcoin at $400,000, but first it has to clear $81,000″>Bitcoin, but the real-world data tells a very different story about which coin actually has the stronger case right now.

We asked ChatGPT whether Bitcoin or XRP has more upside from here. ChatGPT gave a two-part answer at first, crediting XRP with more room to run in percentage terms while calling Bitcoin the safer, more established move. When we pushed the chatbox to pick one coin, it settled on XRP.

Here is how XRP and Bitcoin have actually performed in 2026, why ChatGPT favors XRP, and whether we think its pick holds up.

How Have XRP and Bitcoin Performed So Far in 2026?

XRP started trading in 2026 near $1.84 and trades near $1.35 today, down about 26%. The coin fell as low as $1 in mid-August before rallying more than 20% over the following weeks, and it remains well below its $3.84 all-time high from January 2018. XRP spot ETFs recorded $18.96 million in net inflows in the week ending September 4, perSoSoValue. This marked a sharp slowdown from the $110.5 million in net inflows recorded in the week ending August 28, although XRP ETFs remained in positive territory.

Bitcoin’s 2026 opening price was around $87,497 and trades near $77,565 today, down about 10%. The coin fell as low as $63,900 in early August before recovering, and it remains below its own all-time high of $126,198 from October 2025.Bitcoin’s ETFspulled in $986.9 million during the week ending September 4 alone, extending a pattern of steady demand that has held up even as the altcoin funds slowed.

Bitcoin’s 10% decline is less than half the size of XRP’s 26% decline from its 2026 opening price, and Bitcoin’s ETF demand has stayed strong through the same week XRP’s slowed sharply. XRP has still recovered more from its own August low in percentage terms, but that hasn’t been enough to close the gap Bitcoin opened earlier in the year.

Why Does ChatGPT Favor XRP over Bitcoin?

ChatGPT said XRP has more potential upside in percentage terms, while Bitcoin has the stronger case for a more established, lower-risk move. ChatGPT’s reasoning rested on four points, and the numbers behind them hold up when checked against real market data.

    Bitcoin’s Market Cap

ChatGPT’s central point was market-cap math. Bitcoin’s market capitalization stands near $1.58 trillion today, while XRP’s stands near $89.8 billion, about 18 times smaller.

Bitcoin doubling its price would require roughly $1.58 trillion in new value entering the coin, while XRP doubling its price would require about $89.8 billion, a much smaller amount of fresh capital to move the price by the same percentage. That gap is the mathematical basis for ChatGPT’s answer, and it does not depend on either coin’s specific catalysts.

    XRP’s Smaller ETF Base

Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $986.9 million in the week ending September 4 alone, according toSoSoValue, more than the entire XRP ETF complex has taken in since it launched in November 2025.

XRP’s ETFs hold a smaller share of the coin’s total market cap than Bitcoin’s ETFs hold of Bitcoin’s, so a comparable dollar amount of new ETF buying moves XRP’s price by a larger percentage than it moves Bitcoin’s. For that reason, ChatGPT’s ETF point works in XRP’s favor, even though Bitcoin’s ETFs currently take in far more money in absolute terms.

    Regulatory Clarity

ChatGPT pointed to regulatory clarity as a second lever specific to XRP. TheCLARITY Act, the bill that would classify XRP as a commodity under federal law, faces a Senate cloture vote on September 15, though the bill has run into a dispute over ethics language and Republican senators have publicly questioned whether it survives the vote.

Bitcoin does not carry the same open legal question, so it has no comparable discount to remove. If the bill passes, XRP has a specific event to point to that Bitcoin’s price does not.

Can ChatGPT’s Pick Outperform From Here?

We disagree with ChatGPT’s pick, and we would lean toward Bitcoin having the more reliable upside from here, even though XRP’s mathematical ceiling is real. We think the math ChatGPT used is sound, but math alone does not move a price without the specific catalysts behind it holding up in real time.

The catalysts ChatGPT named for XRP aren’t showing up in the data. XRP’s ETF inflows recorded $18.96 million in net inflows during the same week Bitcoin’s ETFs pulled in $986.9 million, the opposite of the accelerating XRP demand ChatGPT’s case depends on. The CLARITY Act, the specific regulatory catalyst ChatGPT pointed to, is now caught in a dispute over ethics language, and prediction markets put its odds of becoming law this year at only about 14%, down from 82% earlier in the year.

Our view would change if XRP ETF inflows reaccelerate the way they did in late August, or if the Senate cloture vote passes on September 15 despite the current dispute. Either development would restore the specific catalysts ChatGPT’s case rests on, and XRP’s smaller market cap would then give it more room to move than Bitcoin on the same amount of new demand.
