XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) is trading around $1.35, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) is around $77,000. XRP remains about 65% below its January 2018 record of $3.84, while Bitcoin is roughly 39% below its October 2025 all-time high of $126,198.

That gap gives XRP more room to recover, but a larger distance from an old high doesn’t by itself make a coin the better buy. Bitcoin has the deeper institutional base and stronger liquidity, while XRP has delivered the larger recent rebound and carries a regulatory catalyst Bitcoin doesn’t have. The better choice depends less on how much room each coin has to rise and more on what’s actually driving demand for each one right now.

XRP Has Much Further to Go to Reclaim Its High

XRP reached its all-time high of $3.84 on January 4, 2018. At around $1.35 today, the token would need to gain roughly 184% to return to that level, taking it to about 2.84 times its current price. That leaves XRP with substantially more ground to recover than Bitcoin, though the size of the gap alone says nothing about how likely XRP is to close it.

Bitcoin reached its all-time high of $126,198 on October 6, 2025. At around $77,000, it would need to gain roughly 64% to reclaim that record, taking it to about 1.64 times its current price. Bitcoin has a much shorter path back to its previous high, and the fact that its record was set less than a year ago gives the comparison a different context than XRP’s eight-year-old peak.

XRP offers more potential upside if it returns to its previous high, but it needs a much larger move to get there, while Bitcoin needs a smaller gain to reclaim its record. Neither calculation says which asset is more likely to deliver that return, so the next question is whether recent performance supports either case.

XRP Has Fallen Further and Rebounded Faster

XRP’s 30-day gain of roughly 40% through <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/we-asked-chatgpt-and-grok-where-btc-trades-by-the-end-of-september/” title=”We Asked ChatGPT and Grok Where BTC Trades by the End of September”>September 10 shows the token has recently moved much faster than Bitcoin, but that rebound hasn’t erased the damage from earlier in the year. XRP remains down about 25% for 2026 and roughly 53% over the past 12 months, compared with Bitcoin’s declines of about 11% and 30% over the same periods. That leaves Bitcoin substantially closer to its previous highs despite its slower recent rebound.

XRP’s stronger monthly performance doesn’t mean it’s become a safer recovery trade. The token has more ground to recover, and its larger swings have produced both the bigger recent gain and the deeper longer-term losses, while Bitcoin’s smaller decline shows it has held its value better through the same stretch.

XRP Has a Near-Term Regulatory Catalyst Bitcoin Lacks

XRP has a specific near-term catalyst Bitcoin doesn’t: the Senate is scheduled to hold a cloture vote on theCLARITY Acton September 15, 2026. The bill would establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, clarifying the roles of the SEC and CFTC, though a successful cloture vote wouldn’t make the bill law immediately, since it would still need to clear the Senate floor and reconcile with the House’s version.

The market has already priced in a far lower chance of the bill advancing than it did earlier in the year. Polymarket puts the odds of the bill being signed into law in 2026 at 17%, down from an 82% high in February. That makes the September 15 vote worth watching for XRP, but treating a successful cloture vote as an immediate fundamental change would be a mistake, since real legislative steps remain after it.

Bitcoin doesn’t have an XRP-specific regulatory event on the same date, but both assets face the Federal Reserve’s September 16 rate decision. That decision could move the broader crypto market through shifting interest-rate expectations and liquidity conditions, making it a more significant near-term macro event for Bitcoin than any single Bitcoin-specific catalyst would be.

ETF flows complicate the regulatory case for XRP rather than settling it. XRP spot ETFs have brought in roughly $1.66 billion in cumulative net inflows since their November 2025 launch, and they posted a third consecutive day of inflows this week even asBitcoin ETFsrecorded $282.6 million in outflows on September 10 alone, their third straight outflow session. XRP has the regulatory catalyst Bitcoin lacks, and for now, it also has the steadier ETF demand.

XRP Offers More Upside, Bitcoin Has the Stronger Case

XRP needs roughly a 184% gain to return to its $3.84 record, compared with about 64% for Bitcoin to reclaim its $126,198 high. XRP has more theoretical upside on paper, but Bitcoin needs a far smaller move to recover its previous peak and, over the longer term, has held its value better.

That makes the comparison come down to risk tolerance and time horizon. XRP fits investors willing to take on more risk for a larger potential payoff and who want direct exposure to the CLARITY Act outcome. Bitcoin fits investors who want deeper liquidity, a shorter path back to a recent high, and don’t want their near-term return riding on a single Senate vote.
