He supposedly agreed to language that would permit state attorneys general to sue a crypto exchange
Three of the main Republican authors of a cryptocurrency bill have claimed that US president Donald Trump agreed to a considerable chunk of an ethics pitch that is part of the legislation, reported the Associated Press.
Federal judges and federally elected officials and their spouses would be banned from issuing digital assets under this bill. However, a coalition of Democrats and senator Thom Tillis argued that the provision does not adequately tackle conflict-of-interest concerns involving the US president’s crypto earnings.
The group called for the inclusion of language that authorizes state attorneys general to enforce the legislation alongside the justice department. Trump had supposedly agreed to language permitting state attorneys general to file suits against crypto exchanges listing digital assets that are blocked under the overall bill, a senior GOP aide indicated in a brief to media that was issued under anonymity.
The aide said in a statement published by AP News that Trump had approved “about 80 percent” of Tillis’ pitch, which was developed with senator Ruben Gallego. The bill is set for an update reflecting a requirement to either divest or place in a blind trust major financial interest in a crypto-issuing entity.
Senators Cynthia Lummis, Tim Scott, and John Boozman said in a statement published by AP News that state attorneys general would play a “meaningful role” in the crypto bill’s enforcement if it becomes law.
“At every step of the way during the Clarity Act negotiations, the White House and Senate Republicans have been responsive to Democrats’ stated policy objectives. After more than a year’s worth of negotiations, it’s time to pass this bipartisan bill,” wrote Patrick Witt, White House crypto adviser, in an X post
Per AP News, the White House had supposedly privately flagged concerns with authorizing state attorneys general to enforce the crypto bill since Democratic state lawyers could weaponize the law against Trump and GOP officials. Alternatively, Republican attorneys general could turn it against elected Democrats, two individuals aware of the discussions revealed.
AP News indicated that Tillis and Gallego’s aides did not immediately respond to a request for comment as of Sunday September 13.
