Solana(SOL) more than tripled the data a single transaction can carry on Tuesday, raising the network’s cap to 4,096 bytes from 1,232 bytes.

Solana Transaction V1 Goes Live
The new format activated at the start of mainnet epoch 1035, at about 01:00 UTC, according to the Solana Foundation. Development firm Anza led the engineering work, and Jacob Creech and Andrew Fitzgeraldrank among the main contributors.
Two design documents, SIMD-0296 and SIMD-0385, define the larger size and the message layout built to carry it.
Sending a V1 transaction is optional, and legacy and v0 formats keep working exactly as they did before. The extra room holds instructions, signatures and other data a transaction needs to execute, and it does not change how many transactions the network settles each second.
Why Solana’s 4,096-Byte Cap Matters
Under the old cap, developers squeezed complex work into one small package or split it across several transactions, then stitched the pieces back together with bundles. Those bundles never carried a protocol-level promise that every step would succeed or fail as one. V1 also drops address lookup tables and writes account addresses inline, a simpler layout that costs 32 bytes per account rather than a single index byte.
Company wallets that need several approvers gain the most immediate relief, along with zero-knowledge proofs, which verify information without revealing it. Ethereum(ETH) sets no rigid protocol size limit and charges more for heavier operations instead, so the upgrade narrows a structural gap that has separated the two networks for years.
Capacity alone does not guarantee usage. Galaxy Research has argued that much of the value held in Solana tokens still sits idle while rival networks lead in some faster-growing categories. DeFiLlama put the network’s DeFi total value locked near $5.95 billion, and real-world assets on Solana passed $4 billion across more than 350,000 addresses in August.
Solana Upgrades Before Transaction V1
Reading V1 counts as a breaking change for infrastructure, so a request for a single transaction can fail when a service has not updated. Validators and RPC operators should run Agave v4.2.2 or later, and a request for an entire block can fail if that block holds even one V1 transaction.
The original 1,232-byte limit traced back to IPv6 packet constraints that stopped applying once Solana moved its traffic to QUIC. Anza pushed mainnet activation back by six days after ecosystem teams asked for more time to test and integrate. The change follows a May increase in block capacity to 100 million compute units from 60 million and a phased 90% cut to on-chain storage rent.
