TRON founder Justin Sun announced the launch of his own mathematics award — the Justin Sun Prize — with the funds already moved on-chain. Rewards will go to authors of mathematical proofs and specialists who convert them into a format suitable for machine verification, with the payout process designed to be public and automated.

How the Justin Sun Prize will work

According to Sun, the prize will differ from traditional mathematics awards by having no age limits, categories, or annual ceremonies. 

Each problem will have two potential recipients:

• Prover — the author of the mathematical proof
• Formalizer — the person who converts the proof into a format that can be verified by a machine

These roles can be performed by one person or by different participants, and Sun noted that it does not matter whether the result is produced by a human, AI, or a combination of both.

The reward will be paid after a machine verifies the proof line by line from start to finish with no errors. If the mathematical community has already accepted a proof but it has not yet been formalized, it will receive the status “proven, pending formalization,” and the funds will remain locked.

Sun emphasized that his authority will be limited to compiling the list of problems and setting the rewards. Once a problem is added to the registry, it cannot be removed, and the deposited funds cannot be withdrawn.

“I am not a mathematician. I am merely an observer and a benefactor. The rest is left to the proofs,” Sun said.

He also noted that the initial prize pool has already been moved on-chain, its address has been made public, and anyone can verify the balance.

Sun explained the creation of the prize by saying that his wealth largely stems from the mathematical principles underpinning cryptography and blockchain. In his view, the development of AI is ushering in a new era for mathematics, as machines can accelerate the discovery and formalization of mathematical proofs.

Previously, Sun became the prime minister of the self-proclaimed Liberland, which claims to support blockchain technologies. In 2025, he also took part in the Blue Origin NS-34 space mission, paying $28 million for the flight.
