Every September, Apple launches a new iPhone. And every September, crypto Twitter does the same math:how many Bitcoin does it take to buy one? For years, the answer kept shrinking — a straight line toward irrelevance. In 2011, an iPhone cost 162 BTC. By 2025, it was 0.007 BTC. The narrative wrote itself: Bitcoin keeps going up, iPhones stay roughly the same price, and holding crypto beats holding cash. Then 2026 happened, and the math broke.
The Numbers That Tell the Story
Here’s the Bitcoin cost of a base-level iPhone at each launch:
| Year | iPhone Model | USD Price | BTC Price at Launch | Cost in BTC |
| 2011 | iPhone 4S | $199* | ~$3.50 | 162.25 BTC |
| 2016 | iPhone 7 | $649 | ~$528 | 1.23 BTC |
| 2020 | iPhone 12 | $799 | ~$11,400 | 0.070 BTC |
| 2023 | iPhone 15 | $799 | ~$27,200 | 0.029 BTC |
| 2024 | iPhone 16 | $799 | ~$57,000 | 0.014 BTC |
| 2025 | iPhone 17 | $799 | ~$114,000 | 0.007 BTC |
| 2026 | iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | ~$79,000 | 0.016 BTC |
The trendline is dramatic: a 99.4% decline in Bitcoin cost from 2016 to 2025. But the 2026 row is the one that disrupts the pattern. The iPhone 18 Pro costs more than double the Bitcoin of last year’s base model — 0.016 BTC vs 0.007 BTC.
Why 2026 Is Different
Two things happened simultaneously:
Bitcoin’s price dropped. At last September’s iPhone 17 launch, Bitcoin traded near $114,000 — riding a wave of ETF inflows and institutional adoption that had pushed it to an all-time high of $126,198 in October 2025. Today, BTC sits around $79,000. That’s a roughly 38% decline from the peak, driven by a combination ofgeopolitical tensions, ETF outflows, and rising inflation.
Apple raised prices. The standard iPhone 18 isn’t out yet — Apple delayed it to spring 2027 in an unprecedented split launch strategy. So the entry-level Pro model at $1,199 is effectively the cheapest new iPhone available at launch. Last year’s base iPhone 17 started at $799. That’s a $400 difference in sticker price, even before you account for the currency conversion.
When Bitcoin drops 38%, and the iPhone gets 50% more expensive in dollar terms, the Bitcoin cost roughly doubles. Math doesn’t care about narratives.
What This Tells You About Crypto as “Real Money”
Crypto maximalists love the shrinking-iPhone-cost chart because it illustrates Bitcoin’s long-term purchasing power growth. And over a 10-year horizon, the chart is compelling — no serious person would argue that Bitcoin hasn’t dramatically outpaced consumer price inflation since 2016.
But the 2026 reversal reveals something the long-term chart hides: Bitcoin’s purchasing power is volatile on any timeline shorter than several years. If you’d converted $1,199 to Bitcoin in September 2025 to save for the iPhone 18, you’d have roughly 0.0105 BTC today — not enough. You’d need to add more fiat to cover the gap.
This isn’t a criticism of Bitcoin. It’s a description of what Bitcoin actually is right now: a speculative asset with long-term appreciation potential, not a stable store of value for short-term purchases. If someone tells you “the iPhone keeps getting cheaper in Bitcoin,” they’re describing a decade-long trend that includes years where it got more expensive. 2026 is one of those years.
I think the more interesting lens here is what the data says about the gap between crypto’s price and crypto’s usability. If you walk into an Apple Store today, you can’t pay with Bitcoin. You convert to dollars, and you pay dollars. The“iPhone in BTC” metric is a thought experiment about purchasing power —not a practical transaction. And thought experiments are valuable, but they shouldn’t be confused with evidence that crypto has replaced traditional money for everyday use.
The Ethereum Angle Is Even More Dramatic
Bitcoin isn’t the only crypto people track against iPhone launches. Here’s the Ethereum comparison:
| Year | iPhone Model | ETH Price at Launch | Cost in ETH |
| 2015 | iPhone 6S | ~$0.90 | 876.4 ETH |
| 2020 | iPhone 12 | ~$370 | 2.16 ETH |
| 2023 | iPhone 15 | ~$1,650 | 0.48 ETH |
| 2025 | iPhone 17 | ~$4,400 | 0.18 ETH |
| 2026 | iPhone 18 Pro | ~$2,500 | 0.52 ETH |
The reversal is even sharper with Ethereum. According toCoinpedia’s latest analysis, the iPhone 18 Pro costs nearly three times as much ETH as the iPhone 17 did. Ethereum’s price has fallen from $4,400 to roughly $2,500 — a43% decline that compounds with the iPhone’s price increase.
For Ethereum holders, 2026 is a double hit. Thecrypto market shakeoutthat’s taken down over 100 projects hasn’t spared ETH’s price, even as Ethereum’s underlying technology continues to improve. It’s a reminder that asset prices and technological progress don’t always move in the same direction.
What Happens When the Standard iPhone 18 Launches?
Here’s where it gets interesting. Apple plans to release the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027. If it follows the $799-$899 pricing of recent base models, and if Bitcoin recovers to even $90,000-$100,000 by then, the“Bitcoin cost of an iPhone” will drop back toward the 0.008-0.010 BTC range — and the long-term downtrend resumes.
In other words, the 2026 “reversal” may be a blip caused by a specific set of circumstances: Bitcoin’s bear market coinciding with Apple’s decision to delay the cheaper iPhone. If you’re tracking this chart to understand Bitcoin’s long-term trajectory, one anomalous year doesn’t invalidate a decade of data.
But if you’re tracking this chart to decide whether to hold your savings in crypto, the anomalous year is the one that matters most — because it shows what happens when you need your money during a down cycle.
The Honest Takeaway
The Bitcoin-to-iPhone ratio is a fun metric that captures a real truth: over 10+ years, Bitcoin has appreciated far faster than consumer goods have gotten more expensive. That’s meaningful.
But it’s not the whole truth. The metric hides volatility, ignores transaction costs, and treats a speculative asset like a savings account. In 2025, you were a genius for holding Bitcoin. In 2026, you need more of it to buy the same category of product. Both of those statements are true, and they’re not contradictory — they’re just what volatility looks like when you measure it against physical goods.
If there’s a lesson here, it’s this: crypto’s purchasing power story is compelling on a logarithmic chart. It’s messy on a year-to-year basis. And the gap between those two truths is where most people’s actual financial decisions live.
Can you actually buy an iPhone with Bitcoin?
Not directly at Apple Stores. Some third-party retailers and crypto payment processors (like BitPay or Coinbase Commerce) let you spend BTC on Apple products, but you’re essentially converting to dollars at the point of sale. Apple itself doesn’t accept cryptocurrency as payment.
How does Bitcoin’s purchasing power compare to gold over the same period?
Gold has roughly doubled in price since 2016 (from ~$1,250 to ~$2,500 per ounce in September 2026). Bitcoin has risen from $528 to $79,000 — a 150x increase. Over the long term, Bitcoin has far outpaced gold as a store of value, but with dramatically higher volatility.
What’s Bitcoin’s all-time high and how far is it from that now?
Bitcoin reached $126,198 in October 2025, driven by institutional ETF inflows and post-halving momentum. At roughly $79,000 today, it’s approximately 37% below that peak. Analysts are divided on whether the bottom is in, with predictions ranging froma further drop to $38,000 to a rebound above $100,000.
Why did Apple delay the standard iPhone 18 to spring 2027?
Apple split the iPhone 18 launch for the first time, releasing Pro models alongside the iPhone Duo in September 2026 while pushing the standard iPhone 18 to spring 2027. The company hasn’t explained why, but analysts suggest production constraints on TSMC’s 2nm chips and the desire to avoid cannibalizingiPhone Duo sales.
Is the Bitcoin-to-iPhone chart useful for investment decisions?
It’s illustrative but not predictive. The chart shows Bitcoin’s long-term appreciation relative to a specific consumer product — it doesn’t tell you what Bitcoin will do next year. For actual investment decisions, you’d want to consider factors likemarket structure, on-chain data, and macroeconomic conditionsrather than a single product comparison.
