Taiwanese authorities have blocked access to the websites of Coinbase Global and prediction market platform Kalshi in connection with illegal gambling tied to election outcomes, Bloomberg reported. A court in New Taipei City approved investigators’ request to restrict domestic access to the two sites.
Taiwan bans for-profit gambling operations based on election or recall vote results under its laws. Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau said it requested the blocks to protect election integrity and prevent overseas interference. Ahead of local elections on Nov. 28, the government has also stepped up monitoring of illegal fund flows and has warned about the possibility of money from mainland China entering the election process. No allegations have been made that Coinbase or Kalshi handled Chinese funds. Taiwanese authorities had previously blocked access to prediction market platform Polymarket as well.
