Crypto Market Analysis Today: Bitcoin Rally Stalls at $81K

    Update 31 Aug 2026 • Reading Time 8 Minute
    Reading Time:8minutes

Crypto has barely moved this week, after Bitcoin gained 21% the week before. It broke $80,000 on 25 August and peaked at $81,473, its highest level since May, before easing back toward $78,000. This crypto market analysis finds the rally has run out of fuel without reversing. Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows halved to $924.5 million according to SoSoValue, while Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh called inflation “more concerning” at Jackson Hole on 28 August. Until Bitcoin clears $82,814 resistance, the burden of proof sits with buyers.

    Key Takeaways

    • 📈 Bitcoin rallied roughly 30% from 20 August to a peak of $81,473, but failed to break the strong $82,814 resistance level.
    • 📉 Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows fell to $924.5 million between 24 and 28 August, down 51.85% from $1.92 billion the previous week. August still closed at +$3.31 billion, the strongest month since October 2025.
    • 🏛️ Warsh said the US economy is at full employment but called inflation figures “more concerning” in his first speech as Fed Chair at Jackson Hole on 28 August. Bond markets immediately began pricing in a rate hike.
    • 📊 July core PCE, released 26 August, held at 3.3% year-on-year, above the 3.2% forecast. That makes four straight months with no meaningful improvement.
    • 🟢 SOL was the strongest major this week after a network inflation-reduction proposal cleared its governance vote, with the price touching $110, its highest since January.

Market Conditions This Week (31 August)

CoinMarketCap Fear and Greed Index: 72 (Greed).

Crypto is finally seeing euphoria again after Bitcoin surged 30% from $62,000 to $81,000 in two weeks. ETH and SOL followed with gains of similar size, up 30% and 48% respectively, and selected altcoins including HYPE, LIT, PUMP, and ZEC also rose sharply.

Since then Bitcoin has stalled and consolidated around $78,000. Warsh’s hawkish remarks stopped the market in its tracks. Attention now turns to September’s FOMC meeting, which looks like the decisive event. For Bitcoin, September is usually a bearish month.

Macroeconomic Analysis: Warsh Calls Inflation Concerning at Jackson Hole

Kevin Warsh delivered his first speech as Federal Reserve Chair at the Jackson Hole symposium on 28 August. It carried two messages pulling in opposite directions. He said he was impressed by the overall strength of the US economy and described the country as being at full employment, but judged inflation figures “more concerning” with underlying trends yet to improve.

Warsh stopped short of clearly signalling a rate hike at the next meeting. That is precisely what moved markets. One of the changes he has brought since taking office is scaling back how much the Fed communicates about its future plans, and the absence of that guidance left markets to work it out for themselves.

Bond markets worked it out as tightening. Yields moved to price in a rate hike, with the expected timing falling in October or December rather than September. CME Group also leans toward tightening, putting a 61% probability on a hike at the September FOMC.

Inflation data two days earlier pointed the same way. July core PCE, released 26 August, rose 0.2% month-on-month and held at 3.3% year-on-year, above the market forecast of a decline to 3.2%. That completes four months without meaningful improvement: 3.3% in April, 3.4% in May, 3.3% in June, and 3.3% again in July.

Together this added to the market’s confusion. Last week prices rose on US Treasury liquidity, this week they stopped because the policy direction turned more hawkish.

Crypto Market Analysis Today: BTC, ETH, and SOL Technicals

BTC: Stalled at $81,473 After Breaking $80,000

BTC broke $80,000 on 25 August and set this week’s peak at $81,473, its highest level since May. Price then fell back toward $78,231 and held there through the weekend, roughly 3.56% below the peak.

The chart above points to two possible scenarios: consolidation or a continued rally.

With MACD and RSI momentum already very high, Bitcoin looks like it needs a consolidation phase first. The $66,000 to $69,000 range could act as very strong support, because three important daily simple moving averages converge there (50, 100, and 200 day).

On the weekly chart, meanwhile, RSI and MACD still support a continued rally toward the strong $82,814 resistance. If that happens, it would be strong confirmation that June’s $58,000 low was Bitcoin’s bottom for this bear market cycle.

Bitcoin’s direction will likely be set by the US inflation and employment data due early this month.

    • Nearest resistance: $81,473.
    • Nearest support: $77,000, the lower bound of the past few days’ consolidation.

ETH: Holding Above $2,400 as Volatility Rises

ETH is trading around $2,449, moving within a $2,357 to $2,450 range. It briefly broke $2,510 on 25 August, its highest since late January. Ethereum’s chart looks more bullish than Bitcoin’s, because ETH is consolidating in the upper part of its resistance range.

At current levels, ETH will likely follow the usual breakout-retest pattern. The $2,357 to $2,400 area is potential support before ETH resumes its upward momentum.

    • Nearest resistance: $2,500, where selling pressure is starting to appear.
    • Nearest support: $2,357, the lower bound of the past week’s range.

SOL: The Strongest Major This Week After the Inflation Vote Passed

SOL gained more than 10% and touched $110 on 28 August, its highest since January. That followed the SOL inflation-reduction vote passing by a 1% margin, against a 66% approval threshold. Clearing that vote became a strong catalyst for SOL to break $100.

Compared with BTC, SOL has the most bullish chart. It has already broken out after holding above $97. With daily RSI and MACD now fairly high, SOL will likely follow the same breakout-retest pattern as ETH.

    • Nearest resistance: $110, this week’s peak.
    • Nearest support: the $96 to $100 area, previously resistance and an important psychological level.

    On-Chain Data and Institutional Flows

    Spot ETF Flows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $924.5 million between 24 and 28 August, down 51.85% from $1.92 billion the previous week. The slowdown has not shown up in price yet, but it is already visible in the fund flows.

The monthly picture is strong. Cumulative Bitcoin ETF inflows for August passed $3.31 billion, the strongest month of 2026 and the best since October 2025. So this week’s slowdown follows an excellent month rather than arriving mid-downtrend.

Ethereum has been more consistent. Spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $1.42 billion in inflows across ten consecutive trading days from 17 to 27 August, most of it through BlackRock’s ETHA product. The concentration is extreme: on 25 August alone, BlackRock absorbed more than 60% of Bitcoin ETF inflows and 78% of Ethereum ETF inflows in a single day.

    Robinhood Chain Tops DEX Volume

    DEX volume ranking by blockchain

Robinhood Chain is proving it was more than a passing trend. Since launching on 1 July 2026, it has continued to draw the attention of on-chain investors and traders. After memecoins such as CASHCAT posted large gains, attention has moved to the chain’s altcoin segment, where PONS has risen more than 1,000% since 20 August.

Robinhood Chain now ranks fifth in crypto by DEX volume over both seven and thirty day windows. In the last 24 hours, as of 31 August, it ranked second by DEX volume behind only Solana.

If that momentum holds, Robinhood Chain could become a genuine rival for the on-chain trading activity that Base and Solana have long dominated.

Crypto News That Mattered This Week

    • Solana’s inflation-reduction proposal cleared its vote with 67% support. On-chain voting ran from 22 to 27 August during epoch 1023. SIMD-0550 accelerates disinflation so the network reaches 1.5% inflation by 2029 instead of 2032, doubling the annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%. Applied in full, it could cut SOL issuance by 18.9 million tokens over six years. A second proposal, SIMD-0553, changes the transaction fee structure so daily SOL burns could rise from about 650 coins to as many as 9,000. Note that this vote sets direction rather than enacting an immediate technical change. Issuance only falls once the technical document is finished and activated.
    • Ledger patched a security flaw in its Ethereum app. This race condition let a malicious application send a competing command while the user was reviewing a transaction, so the device screen displayed one transaction while a different one was prepared for signing. The risk was users approving unlimited token transfer permissions to an attacker. No confirmed reports of stolen funds tied to the flaw had emerged as of 24 August. Ledger users need to update the Ethereum app to version 1.22.2 or later.
    • Ethereum ETFs logged ten consecutive days of inflows. A total of $1.42 billion came in between 17 and 27 August, with BlackRock’s ETHA the largest contributor. The streak ran while Bitcoin ETF inflows were slowing, so institutional interest this week tilted toward Ethereum.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Bitcoin stop rising this week?

It was a combination of capital flows and policy. Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows fell 51.85% to $924.5 million between 24 and 28 August, while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh called inflation concerning at Jackson Hole on 28 August. The previous week’s rally was largely driven by short liquidations, and that kind of buying pressure stops once the shorts are closed out.

Do falling ETF inflows mean the bullish trend is over?

Not necessarily. Cumulative Bitcoin ETF inflows for August still passed $3.31 billion, the strongest month of 2026, so this week’s slowdown follows a strong month. What matters is whether the slowdown continues into next week, because one weak week after a good month means something very different from two or three in a row.

Why did SOL rise more than BTC and ETH?

Solana had its own catalyst this week. The network’s inflation-reduction proposal cleared its governance vote with 67% support on 27 August, which could reduce SOL issuance by 18.9 million tokens over six years if applied in full. Remember that the vote sets policy direction, and the issuance reduction does not take effect immediately.

What should I watch next week?

Nonfarm Payrolls on 4 September and August CPI on 11 September are the last two data releases before the FOMC meeting on 17 September. On price, $81,473 is this week’s peak and marks whether the August rally continues or stops there.
