Charles Schwab announced on the 27th (local time) that it will add spot trading for Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink to its crypto trading service, Schwab Crypto, within the coming months. This brings the total number of tradable cryptocurrencies to five, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. No specific launch date was disclosed, and the company noted that timing could shift based on regulatory and market conditions. Trading fees are set at 0.75% per transaction, and crypto accounts are excluded from FDIC and SIPC protection. Whether external wallet transfers and staking will be supported has not yet been confirmed.
Key Elements

Charles Schwab, a major U.S. financial services firm, announced on the 27th (local time) that it will add spot trading support for Solana (SOL), Avalanche (AVAX), and Chainlink (LINK) to its crypto trading service. This brings the total number of cryptocurrencies available on Schwab Crypto to five, including the existing Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
Charles Schwab has offered spot crypto trading to retail customers since May. The three newly added assets are expected to be supported within the coming months, though no specific launch date has been announced. The company added that support could be delayed, modified, or withdrawn depending on regulatory, operational, and market conditions.
Joe Vietri, head of digital assets at Charles Schwab, said: “This expansion gives clients more choices when building their digital asset portfolios alongside Schwab’s investing and banking services.”
As of the end of July, Charles Schwab manages approximately $13.04 trillion in client assets, with 39.9 million active brokerage accounts. The addition of crypto support is notable in that it could provide direct token trading access to a massive investor base that already manages stocks, funds, cash, and retirement accounts through the platform.
Characteristics of the Three New Assets
Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink are frequently mentioned together in market rankings, but each belongs to a different type of blockchain network. Solana (SOL) is the native asset of the Solana blockchain, used for network fee payments and staking. Avalanche (AVAX) supports transaction fee payments and staking, and provides infrastructure that allows enterprises to build customized blockchain environments. Chainlink (LINK) is a token that supports oracle and cross-chain infrastructure, delivering external data to blockchain applications and facilitating information exchange between different networks.
However, it is worth noting that these assets can move like a single concentrated position during broad market sell-offs. Solana and Avalanche are simultaneously exposed to conditions affecting smart contract networks, while Chainlink—though functionally different—tends to see its price closely track overall crypto market sentiment.
Trading Fees and Account Protection Scope
Charles Schwab charges a fee of 0.75% of the transaction amount per crypto trade. The fee applies separately to buys and sells. For example, buying $1,000 worth incurs a $7.50 fee, and subsequently selling the same amount incurs an additional $7.50, bringing total trading costs to $15.
| Transaction Amount | 0.75% Fee |
|---|---|
| $500 | $3.75 |
| $1,000 | $7.50 |
| $5,000 | $37.50 |
| $10,000 | $75.00 |
Note: Fees apply separately to each buy and sell transaction.
Charles Schwab’s crypto accounts are provided by Charles Schwab Premier Bank. Cryptocurrencies held in these accounts are excluded from FDIC deposit insurance and SIPC protection, and are classified as speculative assets that carry the risk of total principal loss. Clients should be aware that stocks, deposits, and cryptocurrencies—even when displayed on a single screen—operate under different legal and protection frameworks.
Schwab Crypto accounts are currently available in most U.S. states, with the exception of New York and Louisiana. The service is also unavailable in U.S. territories and overseas, and all applicants must pass eligibility screening.
Remaining Uncertainties
This announcement only confirmed buy and sell functionality. Whether tokens can be deposited from external wallets, whether purchased assets can be withdrawn to self-custody wallets, whether Solana or Avalanche holders will have staking access, which order types will be supported, and how pricing and trade execution will work all remain to be confirmed in final product documentation.
Staking support also affects yield calculations. Solana and Avalanche support protocol rewards under appropriate delegation conditions, but Charles Schwab has not yet committed to offering this service. Until official terms are released, it is advisable not to factor anticipated staking yields into investment calculations.
Charles Schwab plans to continue expanding the range of cryptocurrencies and digital asset products supported on Schwab Crypto. This expansion is viewed as part of a broader digital asset strategy that includes preparations for transfer, trading, and custody services for independent financial advisors.
