Today’s BTC USD price prediction has it sitting at $78.800, down nearly -2% over the past 24 hours, still digesting a sharp knock at the $80,000 ceiling earlier this week. Now analysts are weighing up whether Bitcoin is likely to take a second crack at $80,000 this week.

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes published an essay on August 25, arguing this Bitcoin bull market is being fueled not by a Fed rate cut or regulatory shift, but by the Treasury’s decision to expand buybacks of its own longer-dated bonds.

On August 19, the Treasury confirmed it would at least double the ceiling on certain long-end liquidity-support buybacks, lifting the per-operation cap from $2Bn to $4Bn between September 9 and November 4.

Hayes compares this to Janet Yellen’s late-2023 playbook, which he says pulled roughly $2.4 trillion out of the Fed’s Reverse Repo Program and into risk assets, Bitcoin included.

BTC trades at $78,800, down -1.9% on the day, after oscillating between roughly $77,980 and $79,239 over the last 24 hours. The $80,000 level remains the line in the sand, with it flagged as “psychologically important,” and price has now tested it without a clean close above.

Below, technical analysis points to support in the $72,500–$75,000 zone, with major support near $69,500, though price has since climbed well clear of that range. Resistance clusters around $79,000–$80,000 on the same model, levels BTC has already cleared on its run toward $80K.

Bull case: a decisive close above $80,000 confirms the Treasury-liquidity thesis and opens room toward $84,000+.

Base case: continued chopping between $77,500 and $80,400 as traders await September buyback data.

Bear case: rejection at $80K sends price back toward $74,000, the former resistance-turned-support flagged in FxPro’s wave count.
