Prediction markets have been finding their way deeper into professional sports recently. MLB had announced a multi-year partnership with Polymarket in March and even NHL has a relationship with both Polymarket and Kalshi. Now, one of the biggest faces of the sports world is joining the bandwagon.
Watch What’s Trending Now!
On Saturday morning, NBA megastar, LeBron James, who just signed with the Sixers as a free agent, shared a rather cryptic video on his social media announcing his partnership with Polymarket.
“Welcome to Polymarket HQ. Coming soon,” James wrote in his caption, adding an eyes emoji. “In partnership with Polymarket.”
Now, the 14-second clip didn’t spell exactly what James was joining. It simply showed him entering an elevator with buttons marked as politics, crypto, sports, economy, culture, weather, esports, and technology before he chose “sports.” He then exited the elevator and walked toward Polymarket branding.
That was enough to get the internet rolling. As per Front Office Sports, that single post picked nearly 10 million views within seven hours! Meanwhile, Polymarket responded within the hour of that post. “Thanks for swinging by our HQ,” the company wrote, alongside a goat emoji.
With this move James, a four time NBA champion and four-time MVP, would become the first NBA athlete to sign an individual partnership with Polymarket. Interestingly though, for James, the connection to the prediction market space didn’t begin with this partnership.
LeBron James’ free-agency decision generated more than $273 million in trading volume across these markets as users tried to predict where he would land. The Sixers were not the favorite at first, but he finally agreed to a two-year $8 million deal that includes a player option with them.
Also as per ahe larger segment of this campaign is yet to launch and it will happen early next week. There the focus is expected to be much on football, much like James’ previous relationship with DraftKings
Meanwhile the $9 billion company, is not just roping in superstars, they have also started expanding their horizon. They signed a four-year deal with MLB in March and also have partnerships with NHL, MLS, Serie A and LaLiga. It also has team-level agreements with the Yankees and New York Rangers. And reportedly even NFL star Saquon Barley has invested in the platform.
That being said, this expansion has not been without challenges, and those challenges can go some way toward explaining why James is attracting so much criticism at the moment.
Some 20 states are either suing or joining the lawsuits against Polymarket and its competitor Kalshi, who claim their sporting bets are gambling without a license under current laws. However, both parties claim their betting schemes are nothing but speculative betting similar to commodity trading. Maybe that’s a huge reason of fan distaste.
Fans Slam LeBron James Over Polymarket Announcement
The lack of explanation about the real intention of this deal failed to soothe any of the reactions online. In fact, among the reactions was reputed insider Brett Siegel.
“It’s really sad this stuff is being promoted like this,” he wrote, reposting the video on X.
The NBA does not bar players from endorsing prediction markets, a person familiar with the matter told Front Office Sports. However, players cannot promote contracts tied to specific NBA events, similar to the league’s rules on traditional sports betting.
“This will affect your legacy unfortunately,” one fan wrote.
LeBron James, who is the highest-scoring NBA player with four championships, could potentially be jeopardizing his legacy many felt by getting involved with a business that is facing legal challenges currently.
“No, my king, not Polymarket,” another fan posted.
But James isn’t alone. This partnership also shows a growing trend among athletes of having started working with prediction companies in different capacities. Whether it’s Maria Sharapova who promoted Polymarket on social media, including a video showing her using the platform during a live tennis match or Bryson DeChambeau becoming Kalshi’s first athlete endorser in January, the trend is growing. Even Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team followed with a Kalshi partnership in June.
“So unnecessary to promote this,” another comment read.
James’ reported $1.4 billion net worth eliminates any form of financial motive behind his decision to team up with a company that is still embroiled in lawsuits in about 20 states, amounts to $1.4 billion, which makes it difficult for fans to digest. That being said Giannis Antetokounmpo is also in the mix given he became the first NBA player to directly invest in the company a month later. Sure, he too got plenty of criticism for it.
“Athletes should not be partners with gambling,” a fan wrote.
This is against the backdrop of continuous monitoring in professional sports, including the ongoing gambling scandal being investigated involving former NBA star Terry Rozier. This has made fans wary of athletes who promote themselves with betting sites.
“Being a billionaire isn’t enough, king,” another comment read.
However, the entire story isn’t yet clear. There is still some mystery around what James’ exact role will be. However a Polymarket spokesman, as per reports, described the arrangement as an “exclusive partnership” and said more details would be announced on Tuesday.
