Bitcoin Price Rises as Treasury-Fed Standoff Precedes Warsh Speech
Key Insights:
- Bitcoin price recorded its best weekly gain since March 2023.
- Fed Chairman Warsh to deliver his first Jackson Hole keynote on Friday
Bitcoin price rallied from $63,500 to around $81,250 over the past week, recording its strongest weekly gain since March 2023. The move came as the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve faced a standoff over long-term borrowing costs.

Meanwhile, investors rotated capital toward Bitcoin and gold ahead of Warsh’s Friday speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
What’s Driving the Treasury-Fed Standoff
The tension began on 19 August, 2026, when the Treasury said it would at least double the maximum size of its buyback operations for longer-term government bonds. It would increase the limit from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation.
After the announcement, the 30-year Treasury yield initially fell but then climbed back to 5.247% within 24 hours. Thus, it marked its highest level since 2007.
The quick reversal raised doubts about whether the Treasury’s buybacks were large enough to have a long-term impact on the bond market that supports more than $40 trillion in U.S. government debt. Meanwhile, the Bitcoin price rallied as investors continued to favor hard assets amid concerns over U.S. debt and long-term borrowing costs.

That uncertainty has led the Treasury to consider a larger response. Two senior Treasury officials told CNBC on Aug. 24 that the department could use its General Account, which has grown to about $950 billion under Bessent, to help finance the larger bond buybacks.
Bessent has also said the purchases could go beyond the new $4 billion minimum. However, Treasury’s actually available funds may be closer to $100 billion to $200 billion, as much of the account is already set aside for other obligations. This means the roughly $1 trillion figure may overstate the funds the Treasury can realistically use.
Jackson Hole Symposium: No Q&A for Warsh’s First Keynote
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is scheduled to give his first Jackson Hole keynote on Friday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. ET. The Kansas City Fed’s annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium does not include a live Q&A after the keynote.
So, markets will have to read into Warsh’s comments without being able to ask him directly about the main issue surrounding the Fed and Treasury standoff over Bessent’s bond-buyback plans. Bitcoin price could also react to any signals on interest rates, Treasury yields, or the Fed’s policy outlook.
About 69% of fund managers surveyed by Bank of America expect Warsh to take a neutral stance on the Jackson Hole keynote. That view also underscores the importance of his speech, since a neutral message is already largely reflected in market prices.
Therefore, any major shift in either direction could trigger a stronger market reaction. Inflation has remained above the Fed’s 2% target for more than five years. Besides, the July Federal Open Market Committee meeting ended in a 9-3 vote split, with three regional Fed presidents calling for an immediate rate hike.
Bitcoin Price Rally Reframed as a Financial Repression Trade
The recent Bitcoin price rally was linked to broader economic and monetary factors rather than developments within the crypto market. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, called it “a macro story, not a crypto one”.
He pointed to macro data such as softer inflation and weaker payrolls, which are reducing the probability of further rate hikes. That means continued government efforts to keep borrowing costs under control could lead to migration of capital towards scarce assets such as Bitcoin over the longer term.
Gold prices also surged alongside Bitcoin during the same period, supporting the view that the rally was part of a broader move into assets and was seen as a hedge against currency debasement, rather than a Bitcoin price or crypto-specific event.
The next move will likely depend on how markets react to Warsh’s keynote on Friday. The outcome remains uncertain, as there will be no Q&A and most investors expect a neutral message.
If his remarks support lower long-term yields, they could strengthen the currency-debasement narrative that has helped Bitcoin and gold to move higher. But, if Warsh stresses the need to keep inflation under control or signals that the Fed does not support the Treasury’s buyback plans, assets may experience a sell-off.
The Treasury-Fed standoff is a key market focus for the weeks ahead. The expanded buyback program starts on Sept. 9, the Senate is expected to hold a procedural vote on the CLARITY Act around Sept. 15, and the Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting comes soon after.
Each event could either strengthen the factors behind the recent Bitcoin price rally or challenge the narrative that has driven Bitcoin’s strongest weekly gain of three years.
