What Is Behind This Surge?
A likely factor behind the emergence of a positive trend — not only in cryptocurrencies, but across risk-on assets in general — was remarks by Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher Waller.
On September 3, 2026, at Reuters’ NEXT event, he said he is ready to support keeping rates unchanged at the September 15–16 meeting if August inflation confirms further cooling.
Before that, the market had been seriously pricing in another rate hike. After his comments, the probability of a September hike, according to the CME forecast, fell from about 63.2% to 50.4%.
At the same time, the dollar weakened. The Japanese yen strengthened sharply on expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike, and Waller’s comments added further pressure on the US currency. The dollar index fell by about 0.7%, improving conditions for cryptocurrencies.
As a reminder, in August, bitcoin and Ethereum closed in the green. The main driver of the rally was the US Treasury’s decision to double the volume of long-term bond buybacks, which supported the market.
