The Bank for International Settlements tested the XRP Ledger to make official statistics tamper-evident, using blockchain hashes to verify data origin and integrity.

XRP Ledger Test
BIS Working Paper No. 1374, published Sept. 2, addresses a gap in SDMX, the standard used by international institutions to exchange official economic and financial statistics. SDMX lacks a native cryptographic check for redistributed data.
The researchers created a fingerprint for each dataset, combined multiple fingerprints into a Merkle root, then anchored that summary value on XRPL. A signed credential identifies the publisher, allowing users to verify authorship and data integrity with the file and a single ledger lookup.
Only fingerprints go on-chain. The underlying statistics remain off-chain, which preserves confidentiality while allowing one ledger entry to cover thousands of datasets.

BIS Research Limits
The paper adds another institutional research use case for XRPL, but it does not show that BIS has adopted the network for official operations. Analyst Diana, known as InvestWithD, highlighted the experiment, while Crypto Investment Group stressed the boundary: “Not a partnership. Not an announcement.”
That distinction is central. The paper describes a data-integrity system, not a central bank settlement rail or a commitment to deploy XRPL in production.
XRP(XRP) traded at $1.37 when CoinGape published its report, up 1.42% over 24 hours but down 2.40% over seven days. The research does not indicate that BIS used XRP for settlement, and the prototype does not create direct token demand.
XRPL has separately attracted institutional activity around tokenized assets, including work involving JPMorgan, Ripple, Mastercard and Ondo Finance on tokenized Treasury settlement.
Those projects focus on moving financial assets, while the BIS experiment tests whether official information can be independently authenticated after publication.
The functions are different. Together, they show how XRPL has been tested across institutional use cases, while the latest BIS work remains a DevNet proof of concept.
