Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana Are All Up More Than 20% in a Month and Still Down for the Year. Which Recovers First?

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana have all surged more than 20% off their 2026 lows, yet every one of them remains underwater for the year. The race back to break-even has a clear frontrunner, and it might not be the…

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) and Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) sharp recoveries after hitting their 2026 lows. Ethereum has posted the strongest rebound, while XRP and Solana have also gained more than 40%.

Bitcoin’s recovery has been smaller, but it has the shortest path back to its starting price. XRP has the largest recovery, needing more than 25%. Which of the four closes that gap first before the year ends?

How Much Have Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana Recovered?

Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana all hit their 2026 lows in June, while XRP’s low came later, in August. Bitcoin fell to $58,558.86 in June and has since climbed about 34% to trade near $78,565. Ethereum bottomed at $1,610.48 the same month and has climbed about 55% since, to about $2,490. Solana fell to $69.84 in June and has climbed about 47% since, to about $103. XRP bottomed at $0.9981 in August, more recently than the other three, and has climbed about 44% since, to about $1.42.

The picture changes once the comparison shifts from each coin’s low to where it started the year. Ethereum had the strongest bounce off its low, but XRP and Solana fell further from their starting prices, so they still have more ground left to recover. Bitcoin’s bounce off its low was the smallest of the four, but so is its remaining gap. Bitcoin started 2026 near $87,497 and now trades about 10.2% below that level, the smallest gap of the four. XRP started the year near $1.84 and remains about 25.5% below it, the widest gap of the four. Ethereum trades somewhere in between, down about 20.3% from its own starting price near $3,124.

Bitcoin’s ETF flows back up that smaller gap with the strongest institutional demand of the four. Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $986.9M during the week ending September 4, while Ethereum had $218.40M, Solana had $6.18M, and XRP funds recorded $18.96M over the same week. XRP and Solana still have the highest recent price gains of the group, but that price momentum hasn’t shown up in their fund flows this month so far.

What Could Help Each Coin Recover Its 2026 Losses?

Bitcoin’s key catalyst is the impressive ETF demand it already has and continues to grow. According toSoSoValue, Spot Bitcoin ETFs added nearly $986.9in the week ending September 4 alone, a pace no other coin’s funds matched. Corporate and government treasuries have also continued to add Bitcoin in 2026. The main risk working against that demand is the Federal Reserve. The odds of a September rate hike rose to about 60% following theSeptember 5 jobs report, and a hike would likely pressure Bitcoin’s price along with the rest of the market.

Ethereum’s catalyst runs through its own network rather than its ETFs. Validators have staked nearly 47% of all Ethereum, which removes those coins from active trading. Ethereum also remains the leading blockchain for tokenized real-world assets, even as the coin’s own ETFs have recorded over $4 billion in outflows this year. Ethereum is also approaching a technical resistance zone near $2,500 to $2,550, where several moving averages converge. If institutions keep building on Ethereum despite the fund outflows, that network demand could help close Ethereum’s remaining 25.5% gap.

XRP’s catalyst carries the most uncertainty of the four. TheCLARITY Act, the bill that would classify XRP and some other digital assets as a commodity under federal law, has only a 15% chance of becoming law in 2026, according toPolymarket. XRP must also defend support between $1.30 and $1.35 after its sharp August advance, a level several rallies have failed to hold this year.

Solana’s catalyst is a mix of network upgrades and institutional buying. The Solana Foundation launched Payment Channels on September 3, a feature aimed at handling far more transactions per second. Forward Industries has built a Solana treasury holding more than 6.9 million SOL, and Solana accounts for roughly 97% of tokenized-equity trading volume across all blockchains. Those catalysts depend on continued institutional interest holding up even as Solana’s own ETF inflows slowed this month along with XRP’s.

A continued Bitcoin rally would likely help all three altcoins move faster, based on how closely they have tracked Bitcoin’s price this year. Ethereum, XRP, and Solana all fell alongside Bitcoin during the first half of 2026 and all rallied alongside it in August. If Bitcoin clears the $80,500 to $82,000 resistance zone it has been rejected from twice this month, the three altcoins would likely see a similar boost, even without new catalysts.

    Which Crypto Will Recover First?

We think Bitcoin recovers its 2026 losses first. Bitcoin only needs an 11.4% gain to reach $87,497, less than half the 25.5% Ethereum needs and the 25.77% XRP requires. Bitcoin also drew $986.9 million into its ETFs in the week ending September 4, while Ethereum, Solana and XRP funds all saw inflows drop in the same week.

Bitcoin’s smaller gap and steadier ETF demand give it the most direct route back to its starting price, even though its price has bounced the least off its own August low. XRP and Solana have shown faster short-term momentum, but both need a much larger move to catch up, and both saw fund inflows slow even as their price gains continued.

Our view would change if theFederal Reserveraises rates in September and Bitcoin ETF demand slows as a result, while the CLARITY Act or a Solana network upgrade draws fresh institutional money into altcoins instead. A CLARITY Act cloture vote passing on September 15 would be the clearest single event that could push XRP back into the lead, since the bill’s passage could unlock roughly billions of new capital into XRP ETF inflows over time.
