An experimental project has put a simulated fly brain behind a crypto trading account and the results are as bizarre as they sound.

The experiment is possible because researchers have made enormous progress in mapping insect brains.
A fruit fly has no idea what <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/the-weekly-ma50-is-holding-bitcoin-btc-back/” title=”The Weekly MA50 Is Holding Bitcoin (BTC) Back”>Bitcoin is. Yet a simulated version of its nervous system is now being used to make cryptocurrency trading decisions in one of the more unusual technology experiments to surface this week.
The project, called Stonkfly, was created by engineer Alex Wormuth and uses a digital reconstruction of a male fruit fly’s central nervous system to interpret Bitcoin price charts. Instead of being fed numerical prices or conventional trading indicators, the simulated brain receives a visual representation of a candlestick chart, much like an organism receiving information through its eyes. Its neural activity is then translated into a simple decision: buy, sell or hold.
The experiment is possible because researchers have made enormous progress in mapping insect brains. A 2024 Nature study produced a complete wiring diagram of an adult fruit fly brain containing 139,255 neurons and more than 50 million synapses. More recently, researchers mapped the male fly’s central nervous system, identifying more than 166,000 neurons and about 25.6 million connections between them.
Stonkfly uses that kind of connectome data to create a computational model. According to its documentation, positive changes in the portfolio trigger artificial stimulation of 15 identified dopamine neurons, while losses stimulate two aversive dopamine cells. The idea is to provide the system with a biological-style reward signal rather than programming a conventional trading strategy.
There is, however, a crucial catch. The experiment has not demonstrated that the virtual fly can actually learn to trade profitably. The project’s own documentation explicitly warns against treating the experiment as evidence of a successful trading strategy. The default version uses paper trading and a simulated USD 100 balance, while real trading requires separate credentials and explicit configuration.
That distinction matters because a trading system can appear successful simply because the underlying cryptocurrency rises. A few profitable transactions do not necessarily demonstrate that the simulated brain has learned anything useful.
Still, the experiment is fascinating for a different reason. It demonstrates how increasingly detailed biological datasets can be repurposed for entirely unexpected applications. The fly’s connectome was created to help scientists
understand how neural circuits generate behaviour; Stonkfly is effectively asking whether those same circuits can be placed inside a financial environment.
The result is not a new investment strategy at least not yet. It is a striking experiment at the intersection of neuroscience, computing and finance, and perhaps a preview of a future in which biological intelligence inspires machines to solve problems in ways conventional algorithms do not.
