Bitcoin Price Prediction: We Asked ChatGPT if BTC Can Reclaim $87,500 by December 31

Bitcoin has already bounced 23% off its August lows, but two failed attempts near $80,500 this month suggest the path back to breakeven for 2026 is far from clear. Four specific conditions would need to line up before December 31,…

Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) trades near $78,565 today, about 11.4% short of the $87,500 level where it started 2026. Bitcoin reached $82,283 on September 3, its highest point since the recovery began, before sellers pushed it back under $80,000.

With Bitcoin already rejected twice near $80,500 this month, what would it take for Bitcoin to clear that level and recover 2026’s losses before December 31?

How Much Would Bitcoin Need to Rise to Reach $87,500?

Bitcoin pricetrades near $78,565 today, which puts $87,500 about 11.4% above the current price. That level sits well above the $82,283 high Bitcoin touched on September 3 before sellers pushed it back under $80,000, and it remains roughly 37% below Bitcoin’s October 2025 record of $126,198. Bitcoin has already been rejected twice near $80,500 this month, and it currently holds support near $78,000, with $77,200 as the next level down if that support fails.

Bitcoin has gained more than 11.4% in a single day before, and a move of that size would be enough to reach $87,500 before December 31. The coin has already gained 23% since its August 8 low, more than double the climb $87,500 would now require.

However, what makes the target harder to reach is timing rather than distance. Bitcoin would need to clear a level it has not closed above since earlier this year, and do it while the market prices in a 60% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. Although the move is manageable, whether the market gets the right conditions to make it before December 31 is a real challenge.

What Would Bitcoin Need to Reach $87,500?

Bitcoin would need more than time to reach $87,500. Four conditions stand out.

A Soft September 11 CPI Report

Rate-hike odds for the Fed’s September meeting rose to around 60% after last week’s stronger-than-expectedjobs report, and that repricing helped push Bitcoin back under $80,000. Bitcoin fell from $82,283 to about $78,600 over the following days largely on that shift, showing how sensitive the current move is to a single data release.

A softer core inflation reading on September 11 would cut those odds and pull Treasury yields lower, the same dynamic that has moved Bitcoin’s price by thousands of dollars in a single session this year. Lower yields make Bitcoin more attractive relative to cash, giving the market a reason to test $87,500 instead of its recent lows.

    Bitcoin ETF Inflows

Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $986.9 million during the week ending September 4, according toSoSoValue, even as <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/tom-lee-says-ethereum-hits-6000-by-december-it-needs-bitcoin-at-150000-first/” title=”Tom Lee Says Ethereum Hits $6,000 by December. It Needs Bitcoin at $150,000 First”>Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and Hyperliquid products saw inflows fall between 73% and 96% over the same week. That divergence shows institutional demand concentrating in Bitcoin instead of spreading across the wider market.

Bitcoin ETFs have held that pace for three straight weeks even as the price consolidated below $82,000, suggesting the buying is not purely chasing new highs. A repeat of that pattern would give Bitcoin sustained buying pressure, similar to what has driven its past moves toward new resistance levels.

    Consistent Corporate Treasury Buying

Corporate accumulation has continued even as Bitcoin’s price pulled back. Capital B, a French public company, bought 376 Bitcoin for about $29 million, lifting its treasury to 3,521 Bitcoin. Purchases like that don’t move the price on their own. Still, they add a steady source of demand that doesn’t depend on short-term sentiment, and each additional purchase removes coins from active trading supply, tightening the float available to short-term traders. A wave of similar announcements across multiple companies would add up faster than any single purchase.

    Capital Rotating Back From Altcoins

Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market stands near 59.2%, and it has room to rise if the leverage that flowed into altcoins over the past week starts unwinding. Altcoin open interest passed Bitcoin’s for the first time since December 2024 earlier this month, a shift that has historically preceded sharp corrections in smaller tokens.

A rising dominance share typically coincides with Bitcoin outperforming the rest of the market in dollar terms, since it usually means fresh capital entering crypto favors Bitcoin over smaller, more volatile tokens. If that leverage unwinds and capital rotates back into Bitcoin, Bitcoin would gain more capital while altcoins would lose at the same time.

Can Bitcoin Realistically Reclaim $87,500 This Year?

We think Bitcoin can realistically reach $87,500 before the end of the year, but breaking above the level and holding it are two different tests. Bitcoin gaining 11.4% over roughly four months is well within its normal range, smaller than the 21% bounce the coin has already made since its August 8 low. Bitcoin has moved 11% or more within a single month in this past this year, so this move alone would be normal.

However, Bitcoin’s price has already failed twice near $80,500 this month, and the market is pricing a 60% chance of a Fed rate hike in September. A hike, or a hot CPI report on September 11, would likely push Bitcoin toward its $78,000 support instead of $87,500, and short-term whales holding $9.07 billion in unrealized profits give the market a ready
