US Senate to Vote on Crypto Regulation Bill as Support Remains Uncertain

US Senate to Vote on Crypto Regulation Bill as Support Remains Uncertain

A single procedural vote could decide whether Washington advances its biggest crypto rules effort before lawmakers run out of time.

The U.S. Senate is set to vote on Tuesday, September 15, on advancing a sweeping cryptocurrency regulation bill. The outcome of the procedural vote could determine the legislation’s future, as Senate Republican leaders have little time left to consider it during a busy election year.

The bill would establish a regulatory framework for digital assets. Cryptocurrency companies believe this would provide them with clearer legal conditions for operating. The industry, which has significant financial reing the bill’s advancement

The bill needs at least 60 votes to move to the next stage. Even after Senate Republicans released an updated version on Sunday containing provisions intended to address concerns from the banking sector and some Democrats, the outcome of the vote remains uncertain. The vote is scheduled to take place shortly after 2 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, or 6 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time.

Although passage of the bill would be a positive signal for the cryptocurrency market and is broadly supported by the industry, investors and analysts believe the market has already largely priced in a scenario in which the legislation does not take effect in the near future.

Another delay would be negative, but it would probably not trigger a new market shock. At the same time, passage of the bill would reduce legal uncertainty and could pave the way for increased activity from institutional investors.

Analysts describe the vote as a key test of support for the legislation. If the bill fails to secure the required number of votes, Republicans will have few opportunities to return to it before the end of the current session.

Restrictions on Officials and Disputes Over Stablecoins

Democrats are calling for stricter restrictions on government officials who may profit from their own cryptocurrency projects. The demand is partly related to U.S. President Donald Trump’s memecoin and the cryptocurrency company World Liberty Financial, which is run by his sons. In June, Trump disclosed information about his cryptocurrency projects.

The updated version of the bill gives state attorneys general greater authority to enforce the restrictions. It also requires officials to sell significant holdings in cryptocurrency-related companies or place such assets in a blind trust.

Some provisions concern stablecoins – cryptocurrency tokens whose value is typically pegged to a stable asset. The bill could allow some of them to compete with bank deposits, which the banking sector says could potentially reduce the funds available for lending.

Banking organizations criticized the revised version of the legislation. They said the proposed changes did not do enough to address concerns about stablecoin rewards, which could eventually weaken banks’ ability to provide loans.

Thus, the Senate vote will mark an important stage for the digital asset regulation bill, although even its advancement would not guarantee the legislation’s final passage.

    We recommend paying attention to:

    • Crypto companies and banks are intensifying state-level lobbying before a September 15 Senate vote on the Clarity Act, exposing a fierce fight over digital asset regulation.
    • Bitcoin’s recovery above $70,000 faces pressure from a possible Federal Reserve rate hike, rising bond yields, and a pivotal US Senate crypto vote.
    • Global money market fund assets reached a record $13.5 trillion as rate cuts failed to reverse inflows, with institutional investors and AI-related corporate financing reshaping demand for liquid assets.
