Solana is advancing its mainnet speed-up. The network has completed its first round of parameter adjustments, reducing the block interval from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. This setting is expected to take effect at Epoch 1020, corresponding to August 21, 2026.

First round of adjustments is on-chain

This update, initiated by Solana development firm Anza, is part of the Agave v4.2 validator client upgrade. According to the roadmap, there will be further phased reductions in the block interval, aiming to compress the mainnet slot time down to 200 milliseconds.

If this target is achieved, Solana’s theoretical block production frequency will be doubled compared to before, and the number of blocks the network can process will also increase accordingly. The report also mentions that shortening the time window for each leader to produce consecutive blocks helps reduce the control any single block producer has in a short period of time.

Testnet has nearly reached 200 milliseconds

Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza, stated that Solana’s testnet slot time has once dropped to 182 milliseconds. Testnet block explorer data shows that the average block interval over the past hour is about 193 milliseconds, indicating that recent incremental adjustments have almost been fully implemented.

On testnet, new reductions are typically made every 2 epochs. If mainnet follows a similar schedule, the 200 millisecond block interval may be adopted around Epoch 1026, estimated to be around September 1.

However, the pace of mainnet upgrades has not been finalized. The report notes that Solana validators have reached a consensus: if the network skip rate is too high, the next round of speed-up will not proceed.

Increased block limit in parallel

In addition to shortening the block interval, Solana is also increasing block capacity. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz stated in a podcast that if both the faster slot time and higher block limits take effect simultaneously, the network’s short-term performance improvement could reach up to 4 times.

Future upgrade plans also include Alpenglow. This solution, also designed by Anza, aims to adjust Solana’s consensus process to reduce final transaction confirmation time to 150 milliseconds and decrease validator voting costs per epoch to about 1.6 SOL, below the current level of roughly 2.4 SOL.

According to the schedule, 350 milliseconds is only the starting point for Solana’s current round of performance upgrades. Whether the mainnet continues to advance as the testnet has will depend on network stability and validators’ observations of runtime data.
