    Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse.

Ripple Positions Itself as the Bridge Between TradFi and DeFi

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse is doubling down on the company’s strategy of connecting traditional finance with blockchain while rejecting the idea that crypto is inherently anti-regulation.

Speaking at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, Garlinghouse pointed to Ripple’s 75 licenses worldwide as evidence that regulated financial services and crypto can coexist.

He also cited a U.S. court ruling that XRP itself is not a security, reinforcing Ripple’s push for clearer regulatory distinctions between digital assets and the transactions involving them.

Garlinghouse said Ripple has deliberately positioned itself as a bridge between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). As banks and institutions increasingly seek regulated access to blockchain, that strategy could become one of Ripple’s biggest advantages.

    Ripple’s Institutional Expansion Gains Momentum

Garlinghouse expects Ripple to post a record year, with revenue projected to more than double year over year despite softer conditions across the broader crypto market. He believes institutional infrastructure will drive much of the industry’s next growth phase.

Ripple’s aggressive acquisition strategy reflects that ambition. The company completed $2.5 billion in acquisitions last year and $3 billion in shareholder tender offers over the past two years. Garlinghouse also expects larger deals and more consolidation as the market moves through its downturn.

Two acquisitions are particularly significant. Hidden Road processed about $3 trillion in transactions last year, while GTreasury handled roughly $13 trillion. Combined, they give Ripple exposure to around $16 trillion in financial activity.

    Corporate Finance Is Taking Notice

Garlinghouse said Ripple has seen a sharp shift over the past six months, with more CFOs and corporate treasurers approaching the company about its technology.

Therefore, this points to a broader change in crypto adoption. Institutions are increasingly looking beyond trading and speculation toward practical blockchain applications such as payments, liquidity, settlement, custody and treasury management.

It also supports Ripple’s strategy of working with financial institutions rather than positioning blockchain as a replacement for banks.

    AI Payments Need Guardrails

Garlinghouse remains more cautious about agentic payments. While he sees significant potential for AI agents to execute transactions autonomously, he believes enthusiasm is currently ahead of real-world implementation.

For businesses to embrace agent-driven payments, strong controls around authorization, accountability, fraud prevention and spending limits will be essential.

Ultimately, Garlinghouse’s message is straightforward that the future of finance may not be TradFi versus crypto. It could be the two worlds converging, and Ripple wants to build the bridge between them.
