DeFi Rate projects Kalshi NFL trading volume will reach roughly $3.2 billion through Week 1 and $57 billion across the full 2026–27 season. The forecast reflects the sharp expansion in prediction-market participation and NFL contract inventory over the past year, while using last season’s week-by-week trading pattern to model how volume is likely to build across the season rather than extrapolating the current growth rate indefinitely.

The NFL season has barely started, but trading on Kalshi’s football markets already looks very different from last year.  Our conservative forecast puts total NFL volume from Kalshi at $56.51 billion for the 2026–27 cycle compared to the $7.21 billion from last year.

The higher-growth path could reach $128.14 billion, but it requires much more of the preseason surge to persist. Because this season includes a broader product catalog and cumulative trading in future games, the conservative path remains the target number.

DeFi Rate’s conservative projection of Kalshi NFL prediction-market trading volume for the 2026-27 season, week by week from preseason through the Super Bowl: $56.5 billion in total, with bars showing each week’s projected volume and the line showing the cumulative season total. The projection applies last season’s week-by-week trading pattern to this season’s larger contract catalog and participation; moneyline and direct winner markets account for about 75% of the total, derivatives 18%, with futures, player props and combination markets making up the rest. The table breaks each week down by market segment.

How large could the NFL market be this year?

As of Sept. 5, Kalshi had recorded at least $621.45 million across current NFL markets, including contracts on future games and season-long outcomes. The conservative headline scenario projects $2.55 billion for Week 1, then assumes that the preseason expansion fades sharply as the regular season develops, producing an estimated $57 billion for the entire season, including the Super Bowl. The $128.14 billion scenario remains useful as an upside boundary, but not as the expected result.

Moneylines remain the largest part of the conservative forecast, with derivatives a smaller second engine. Together, they account for more than nine in ten projected contracts.

Note: Velocity Weight equals each 2025–26 period’s actual volume divided by 2025–26 Week 1 actual volume, which is set to 1.00000. The model applies the historical shape by product layer. The preseason row shows last season’s preseason-to-Week-1 relationship for context; 2026 preseason remains the current booked minimum. Futures and player props use their 2025 period mix.

The NFL season is entering a much larger prediction market

Any projection for NFL trading in 2026 needs to account for how quickly the underlying prediction market industry has changed.

Six months ago, the Super Bowl was itself a major stress test. DeFi Rate tracked $1.63 billion on the 2026 Super Bowlacross Kalshi and Polymarket, including game markets, player props, combos, broadcast mentions and other contracts. Kalshi’s tracked Super Bowl volume alone was up nearly 30-fold from the previous year.

The market entering this NFL season is already considerably larger.

Robinhood customers traded a record 13.6 billion event contracts during the second quarter, up 55% from 8.8 billion in the first quarter. Event contracts generated $156 million of revenue for Robinhood in the quarter, compared with $104 million in the first quarter.

Investors are pricing in similar growth. Kalshi raised $1 billion at a $22 billion valuation this year, roughly twice its valuation from its previous funding round. Polymarket also reportedly raised $1 billion at a $21 billion valuation, bringing it close to Kalshi’s reported valuation.

This season is already showing what that larger distribution base can mean. Prediction market volume on NFL contracts reached $167.8 million in the week ending Aug. 16, up from $39.5 million the previous week, with preseason games accounting for $143.5 million.

Those growth rates will obviously not extend across the full 18 weeks. The 324% weekly jump came as preseason inventory expanded, while February’s Super Bowl volumes included an unusually broad mix of contracts beyond the game itself.

Legal uncertainty around sports event contracts also remains unresolved, with New Jersey now asking the Supreme Court to decide how far federal preemption extends. This could significantly impact the final numbers as more states pursue enforcement actions and prediction-market platforms challenge those restrictions in court while courts reach conflicting conclusions.

The case for a much larger NFL season is that 2026 is starting with substantially more distribution, liquidity and product inventory than the market had a year ago. The biggest uncertainty is whether exchanges act on the NFL’s request to remove contracts it considers vulnerable to manipulation and whether the CFTC adopts broader restrictions on sports-event markets. The league renewed that pressure last week, saying exchanges were still listing contracts in categories it had flagged months earlier.
