The U.S. Treasury announcedon Aug. 19 that it will at least double the amount of longer-term government bonds it buys back.
The buyback figure will increase from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation starting Sept. 9, the Treasury added.
As such an announcement tends to make risky assets more attractive, top cryptocurrencies began rallying.
Bitcoin (BTC) rose to trade at $67,983.35 at press time, up 5.5% over 24 hours. Ethereum (ETH) rose 9% to $2,078.44, and Solana (SOL) rose 5.5% to $81.16.
$1.6 billion in shorts liquidated
As the crypto prices began climbing on the charts, bearish traders began to quickly liquidate their short positions.
As per the onchain analysis platform CoinGlass, crypto positions worth $1.75 billion got liquidated within the last four hours. It includes an overwhelming $1.63 billion in short positions and $124 million in long positions.
Bitcoin led the liquidations, with $1 billion in short and $31 million in long positions.
Ether stood at the second position, with $446 million in short and $46 million in long positions.
Solana wasn’t far behind, with $41 million in short and $1 million in long positions.

Sentiment turns from fear to neutral
As per CoinGlass, the Crypto Fear & Greed Index turned from “Greed” to “Neutral” as crypto prices rallied.
It means that crypto investors are no longer fearful and hold a neutral view of the market.
