The crypto market is witnessing an unexpected turnaround. Bitcoin is up over 20% for the week, reaching around $77,000. Ether is outperforming the leading cryptocurrency. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being funneled back into digital assets. After months of speculation, the crypto bull market 2026 narrative is no longer a farce. However, the central question is whether the asset category is witnessing a broad-based recovery or if Bitcoin is merely a star performer.

There are clear signs that capital is rotating toward altcoins. Ether is outperforming Bitcoin, and several major altcoins are up over 10%. However, Bitcoin dominance remains remarkably strong.

The most popular Altcoin Season Index is nowhere near the critical threshold that would suggest an altseason is underway. So, is this the start of a crypto bull market 2026, or is it merely Bitcoin recovering?

What Is Driving the Crypto Bull Market 2026?

Bitcoin’s recent rally is taking place at an astonishing speed. BTC▲$62,630.00 climbed from roughly $64,600 on August 5 to above $79,000 before finding a new home at $77,000. This means that bitcoin is up almost 23% in just one week and extremely close to a three-month peak.

There are multiple reasons for this sharp increase.

First, there was improved liquidity: the U.S. Treasury announced an expansion of its bond buyback program for longer-dated paper. This move should improve market liquidity, weaken the dollar, and propel alternative assets to new highs. Bitcoin and gold are prime examples of assets that benefit from this type of environment, where scarcity drives prices higher.

Another factor was institutional demand. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs drew in roughly $1.6 billion in net inflows over four days. This was an unbelievable turnaround for crypto assets, as demand was exceptionally low throughout much of 2026 for these funds.

Additionally, there was increased regulatory optimism as the White House supported Bitcoin-friendly market structure legislation like the CLARITY Act. This development suggests that Washington will continue to be a strong ally to crypto exchanges, token issuers, and institutional investors.

Finally, the leveraged shorts were crushed as the price skyrocketed. Bears were forced to buy back their tokens, which drove the price higher. These forces combined to make the case for a crypto bull market 2026 extremely strong.

Is Bitcoin’s Rally Finally Spreading to Altcoins?

That brings us to the most crucial question regarding the health of the crypto bull market 2026 narrative. While Bitcoin is up nearly 24% for the week, Ether is up an astonishing 31%. Furthermore, Aave is up over 60%, while Zcash is up around 75% and PEPE▲$0.00000278 is up nearly 60%. The aggregate market value of cryptoassets outside of Bitcoin increased by approximately 215 billion between August 19 and 22.

But Ether appears to be the most critical barometer.

The price of ETH▲$1,761.17 is <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ethereum/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>nearing $2,460 after spending much of the summer below $2,000. The ETH/BTC ratio has jumped by around 25% from its June low to recently post a vital golden cross (50-day moving average crossed above the 200-day moving average). In other words, there is a rotation from BTC to altcoins.

Bitcoin dominance is usually the first to give up its position in a strong bullish market. The sharp increase in Ether’s popularity relative to Bitcoin is a leading indicator that altcoins are becoming more attractive to investors.

Why This Is Still Not a Confirmed Altcoin Season

The Altcoin Season Index from blockchaincenter.io stands at roughly 47 on August 24. An index score of 75 or higher is required for an altseason to begin.

The index is based on the number of top 50 coins that have outperformed Bitcoin during the previous 90 days. A 47 score is much better than the 25 score seen in May, but it still means that most coins underperformed bitcoin over the last three months.

BTC dominance is currently around 59%, with Ether dominance at around 11%. Bitcoin dominance tends to shrink as altcoin dominance increases over time. If most investors continue to put their money into Bitcoin rather than altcoins, the altseason narrative will be difficult to support.

A third challenge to the altseason idea is that many of the top weekly performers are still massively below their previous peaks. A 50% or even 100% increase in value over a short period may appear impressive, but this development does not necessarily indicate the start of a long-term bull trend.

In short, the technical evidence for an altseason is not yet overwhelming. The crypto bull market 2026 appears to be broadening – but the long-awaited altseason is still waiting to begin.

What Would Confirm an Altcoin Season?

There are several crucial signs that would suggest that the altseason has arrived. First, Bitcoin must begin to lose its appeal to investors. As the dominant crypto asset, a drop in dominance would suggest that BTC investors are rotating out of bitcoin and into other assets.

The Altcoin Season Index needs to climb above 75. This would suggest that more than 3 out of every 4 top-50 coins are outperforming Bitcoin over the past 90 days.

Ethereum needs to continue to outperform Bitcoin and drive the ETH/BTC ratio higher. The cross by the 50-day moving average above the 200-day moving average is also a vital altseason sign, which suggests that the price of ETH is rising faster than the price of BTC.

Finally, trading volumes need to remain high for the crypto bull market 2026 to continue and for altcoins to rise. Right now, trading volumes are around $90 billion per day, while total market capitalization has recovered to roughly $2.6 trillion, but if these figures remain consistently high while altcoins enjoy more capital, then the altseason narrative will soon gain credibility.

A sideways move in Bitcoin is the best-case scenario for altcoins, but the price discovery process will determine which assets rise the fastest in the years ahead.

If Bitcoin breaks out higher, traders may continue to chase the coin instead of selling it off for altcoins. On the other hand, a correction could devastate altcoins as well. In short, the best time to buy altcoins is when Bitcoin consolidates its gains and begins to move sideways rather than higher or lower.

Could the Crypto Bull Market 2026 Still Fail?

Yes. There are warning signs that the rally is still extremely fragile. For example, Bitcoin’s daily relative strength index (RSI) has jumped above 80, a level that suggests that the price is overbought. The crypto bull market 2026 narrative will need to cool down soon, which means that a correction is likely.

In addition, Bitcoin is still around 38% below its previous peak near $126,000, so one strong week is not enough for the bulls to declare victory.

The overall macroeconomic environment also appears to be extremely uncertain, as treasury yields remain high, inflation is far from being conquered, and geopolitical tensions remain incredibly high. The same liquidity conditions that allowed the recent rally to happen could turn against the bulls, which would cause a sharp decline in prices.

Another issue is that spot ETFs enjoyed a fantastic week, but the crypto bull market 2026 needs ongoing inflows rather than sporadic ones.

Finally, altcoins face the threat of an oversupply, which will affect their ability to rise in value. After all, thousands of altcoins are battling for the same capital, and constant unlocks dilute the supply, weakening the bull argument.

Is the Crypto Bull Market 2026 Turning Into Altcoin Season?

Yes and no. Right now, the overall market appears to be in the early stages of a broader rally, but the critical evidence has not appeared.

Ether is outperforming Bitcoin, major altcoins are rising faster than the leading cryptocurrency, and the overall altcoin market capitalization is exploding. All of these developments point to an altseason, which usually occurs after a significant Bitcoin rally.

However, bitcoin dominance remains incredibly strong, and the Altcoin Season Index is below 50. This means that there is still more demand for Bitcoin than altcoins.

With that said, there are early signs that altcoins may be following suit. The most compelling evidence comes from ether, which appears to be attracting a growing number of investors. If ETH dominance begins to rise, it will be a critical sign that altcoins are becoming more appealing. The same goes for other leading cryptocurrencies, including cardano (ADA▲$0.1791) and solana (SOL▲$82.41).

If Bitcoin can continue to hold above the crucial breakout level and move sideways while Bitcoin dominance drops, the next stage of the crypto bull market 2026 will see altcoins rising, creating a much more robust rally.

Is the crypto bull market 2026 officially confirmed?

Not yet, as there is no official definition of a crypto bull market. Bitcoin’s recent performance certainly points to a bullish trend, but the coin still has a long way to go before it reaches $126,000, which was the peak in October 2025.

    Is altcoin season happening now?

Not yet, as the Altcoin Season Index indicates that the market is barely above neutral. A reading of 75 or higher usually suggests that an altseason is underway.

Why is Ethereum important for an altcoin season?

Most altcoins underperform bitcoin during a crypto bull market 2026, but ether is usually the bridge to other cryptoassets. If ETH outperforms bitcoin, it suggests that investors are rotating out of BTC to buy alternative assets.

What Bitcoin dominance level could favor altcoins?

There is no specific level, but anything lower than the current value (around 59%) would suggest that BTC dominance is decreasing and altcoins are rising in popularity.

What could stop the crypto bull market 2026?

A reversal in ETF flows, a drop in demand for digital assets, and macroeconomic headwinds could hurt the ongoing rally. Altcoins would also be hit disproportionately due to their increased volatility and risk profile.
