Gwangju Bank has completed a proof-of-concept project for digital meal vouchers for its employee cafeteria using the Solana blockchain.
The bank said on September 14 that the project was a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding signed with the Solana Foundation in June on cooperation in digital-asset payments and ecosystem development. It was designed to assess the practical application of blockchain technology in business operations and build related technical capabilities.
Gwangju Bank, the Solana Foundation and blockchain infrastructure company Nodeinfra participated in the project. The three built a digital meal voucher system for use in the employee cafeteria on the Solana blockchain and verified its feasibility in an actual operating environment.
For employees at its headquarters, Gwangju Bank implemented the entire process in a distributed-ledger environment, from issuing digital wallets to issuing and using meal vouchers, transferring them between employees and settling transactions. It also checked the system’s processing flow and stability through live operations.
The bank said the pilot gave it direct experience in designing and operating blockchain-based digital-asset services. Based on the results, it plans to review follow-up tasks and new services, including digital-asset payments.
Byun Mi-kyung, a vice president at Gwangju Bank, said the PoC enabled the bank to build and operate blockchain-based services directly while accumulating related technology and know-how. She added that the bank would prepare new services in response to changes in the digital-asset market and regulatory environment.
