Solana Foundation Chair Lily Liu said a long-term token asset supercycle is taking shape as capital, assets and ownership shift to blockchain-based internet infrastructure.
In a contributed article, Liu said tokenization is not simply the process of moving traditional assets onto a blockchain, but a fundamental change in how assets are issued and held, how funding is raised, and how trading is conducted in a 24-hour market. Liu said the shift is being driven by stablecoins, the securitization of financial institutions’ assets, and advances in blockchain infrastructure. Stablecoins have already demonstrated the potential for global on-chain fund transfers, while blockchain networks are approaching the speed and cost levels needed for real-world economic activity, Liu added.
Liu also said almost any asset with clear ownership could now be tokenized, broadening distribution and creating new opportunities for fundraising and trading. Over the past year, Solana’s tokenized real-world asset, or RWA, trading volume reached hundreds of billions of dollars, while U.S. Treasuries, stocks and private credit were tokenized, according to Liu. Over the same period, stablecoin transfer volume topped $4.7 trillion, Liu said. Tokenization could also expand investment access by lowering barriers tied to geography, minimum investment thresholds and investor qualifications, while increasing opportunities to use held assets as collateral or generate yield, Liu said.
