Individual Bitcoin miners remain far from recovering meaningful profitability even as major mining companies pivot to AI data center infrastructure in search of higher returns, CoinDesk reported.
Hosted mining platforms such as GoMining and SAZ Mining have recently expanded services that let retail investors rent or buy hashpower without installing equipment at home. In one example, a mining board developed by Jack Dorsey’s Block is selling for $4,187 per unit, with a $153 monthly maintenance fee and a 15% management fee. On-chain analysis showed that even assuming a BTC price of $83,000, annual net profit per board would be only about $633, meaning it would take more than six years just to recover the initial hardware cost.
With the network’s total hash rate holding near a peak at about 1.09 ZH/s, the payback period would lengthen further when the fifth halving arrives in about 18 months, reducing the block reward to 1.5625 BTC. Experts warned that even if large mining firms shift to AI, existing ASIC equipment is being resold into the market and continues to fuel competition in network difficulty, adding that investors should not be swayed by daily mining payouts and should instead closely examine steep depreciation and maintenance costs.
