Japan’s Financial Services Agency held a meeting of its Digital and Decentralized Finance Study Group on Oct. 20 and began discussions on updating regulations for stablecoins, deposit tokens, security tokens, decentralized exchanges, and decentralized finance, CoinPost reported.
The study group reviews legal issues tied to financial innovation and investor protection. At the meeting, Nomura Holdings said Japan’s tokenized finance sector is lagging the U.S. and called for more flexible rules comparable to those overseas. Securitize Japan warned Japan-specific regulation could widen the gap with overseas markets and stressed the need to take public blockchains and institutional investors’ use of DeFi into account. The FSA plans to prepare interim review findings and a public-private joint roadmap with relevant ministries and agencies by early 2027.
