Bitcoin’s 90-day realized volatility recently stood at about 38%, roughly in line with Nvidia shares but about 1.6 times higher than gold, according to a CoinDesk analysis.
As of Oct. 22, gold’s volatility was 23.5%, the U.S. S&P 500 index was 11%, and the euro/U.S. dollar exchange rate was 4.6%, CoinDesk said. BTC was more than three times as volatile as the S&P 500 and about eight times as volatile as the euro/U.S. dollar pair, while remaining close to Nvidia at 37%. CoinDesk explained that realized volatility measures how sharply an asset’s price moves over a given period. BTC’s 90-day volatility has averaged 58% since 2020, peaked at 134% in June 2020, and fell to a record low of 27.5% in September 2025. While Bitcoin’s price swings have eased significantly from past levels and are now closer to large-cap tech stocks, the asset still has not matched the stability of gold or major fiat currencies.
