Bitchat, a decentralized P2P messaging app from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, ranked first in the social networking category on France’s iOS App Store, CoinPost reported. Downloads are said to have surged amid nationwide protests in France and after Orange’s roughly 10-hour service outage on Oct. 21. The app connects nearby smartphones via Bluetooth, allowing users to send and receive messages without internet or mobile networks, and also supports Cashu, a Bitcoin-based electronic cash payment protocol.
