- Ethereum has launched the Plataberget testnet.
- It will serve as a venue for early Glamsterdam testing before it is rolled out on Sepolia and Hoodi.
- The upgrade will change gas accounting rules, meaning parts of wallets, indexers, and fee estimation tools will need software updates.
Ethereum developers launched Plataberget — a new test network to validate the upcoming major Glamsterdam upgrade. It will run for several months and is intended to help developers identify issues before the upgrade is moved to Ethereum’s main testnets.
Special attention will be paid to changes in gas pricing, how wallets and other infrastructure behave, and a new block production mechanism.
Plataberget’s transition to Glamsterdam is scheduled for August 20. Until then, node operators, validators, wallet developers, and other service teams will be able to prepare for the changes.
After testing on Plataberget, developers plan to create another network to investigate complex issues in the block confirmation mechanism. Later, Glamsterdam is expected to be deployed on Ethereum’s main testnets — Sepolia and Hoodi. Once they stabilize, the upgrade will be able to move to mainnet.
What Will Glamsterdam Change?
One of the key changes will be a revision of operation costs on the network. This is needed, among other things, so that Ethereum can process a higher volume of operations.
As a result, some programs that pre-set a maximum gas limit may stop working. This includes, in particular, wallets, data explorers, and fee calculation tools. Ethereum developers are specifically urging teams to test such solutions on Plataberget before Glamsterdam goes live on the long-running testnets.
The way individual operation costs are calculated will also change. For example, a standard Ethereum transfer to an existing account will still cost 21,000 gas. At the same time, a transfer to an address that does not yet exist on the network will cost more, because Ethereum will account for the additional expense of creating a new entry in the network state.
Glamsterdam will also increase the maximum smart contract size from 24 to 64 KB, and the maximum initcode size for deploying them — from 48 to 128 KB.
Another major change concerns the block production process itself. Ethereum plans to split the roles of participants who propose and build blocks. This should make the network more efficient, but it will also require updates to parts of the software stack.
Developers urged to test their products
Plataberget has an open validator set. Anyone can make a test deposit and check how their own infrastructure works. Ethereum developers, in particular, are strongly encouraged to test their solutions:
- wallets.
- blockchain data explorers.
- fee calculation tools.
- validator software.
- staking co-management solutions.
- their own Ethereum applications.
