Crypto Today: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP falter amid escalating US-Iran tensions

    • Bitcoin slides toward the short-term $64,000 support as US-Iran tensions rise after the MoU expired.
    • Ethereum weakens within a narrow range with the 50-day EMA as support and the 100-day EMA as resistance.
    • XRP trades below $1.00, weighed down by a weakening technical structure.

Cryptocurrency prices are broadly correcting on Tuesday, with Bitcoin (BTC) edging lower toward $64,000. Ethereum (ETH) shows weakness amid ongoing narrow-range consolidation, while Ripple (XRP) trades below $1.00, weighed down by falling technical indicators.

US-Iran MoU expires and Trump threatens Oman

The broader cryptocurrency market’s doldrums follow the expiration of the 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the United States (US) and Iran. Tensions between the two nations remain high, with no signs of an imminent end to the war that began in late February.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy and trade, remains effectively closed. According to CBS News, US President Donald Trump has issued strong warnings against Omani interference in efforts to reopen the passage.

Despite Trump’s warnings, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday that Tehran has reached a preliminary agreement with Oman regarding future shipping corridors through the strait.

The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) shows that Oil prices remain elevated above $84 amid uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

    Crypto market sentiment improves

Sentiment in the broader crypto market has climbed to 41 in the Fear territory on Tuesday, up from 31 the previous day, as reflected in the Fear & Greed Index. This suggests that tensions between the US and Iran are not weighing heavily on risk assets.

While Bitcoin’s upside remains capped below $65,000, support is holding between $63,000 and $64,000. Moreover, Gold (XAU/USD) trades elevated near $4,400, underpinning strong investor interest.

Technical analysis: Bitcoin maintains neutral-to-bullish outlook

Bitcoin trades at $64,289, maintaining a capped tone as it sits beneath the short-term 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and the 100-day EMA, while the longer-term 200-day EMA remains a more distant ceiling. The spot price still holds above the upward-sloping support trend line around $62,863 and the SuperTrend baseline near $61,291, suggesting the broader uptrend is intact but under pressure.

At the same time, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) around 52 stays neutral, while the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram is close to flat after narrowing losses, hinting at consolidation rather than impulsive buying interest.

Initial resistance appears at the 50-day EMA around $64,358, with further barriers at the 100-day EMA near $66,360 and the 200-day EMA close to $72,384, which collectively frame the levels bulls would need to reclaim to restore a clearer bullish bias. On the downside, the immediate focus is on the recent pivot area around the current price zone, followed by the rising trendline support at roughly $62,863 and the SuperTrend line near $61,291. A daily close below these supports would likely open the way for a deeper corrective phase toward lower levels.

Altcoins technical outlook: Ethereum and XRP trade sideways

Ethereum trades at $1,900, holding above the 50-day EMA and the SuperTrend support at $1,777. This positioning keeps the near-term tone neutral to slightly constructive, as the price is sandwiched between the 50-day EMA at $1,870 and the 100-day EMA at $1,919, which cap the upside.

The RSI at 54 sits near the midline, hinting at balanced momentum, while the MACD remains marginally below zero with a contracting negative profile, suggesting waning bearish pressure rather than a clear bullish impulse.

Initial resistance sits at the 100-day EMA near $1,919. A daily close above would open the way toward the more significant barrier at the 200-day EMA around $2,111. On the downside, immediate support lies at the $1,900 zone, followed by the 50-day EMA at $1,870, while a deeper pullback toward the SuperTrend base around $1,777 would test the integrity of the broader recovery structure.

XRP, on the other hand, trades marginally below $1.00, maintaining a bearish near-term tone as price holds decisively below the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day EMAs. The downward resistance trendline break area at $1.06 now aligns with these overhead EMAs, while momentum indicators reinforce the downside bias.

Meanwhile, the RSI at 36 stays in bearish territory without yet signaling oversold conditions, and the MACD remains marginally negative, hinting at persistent selling pressure rather than a clear reversal.

Initial resistance lies at the downward trendline break level around $1.06, followed closely by the 50-day EMA at $1.07, forming a nearby supply cluster that bulls would need to clear to stabilize the picture. Higher up, the 100-day EMA at $1.16 marks the next hurdle before the more strategic 200-day EMA at $1.35, which continues to cap the broader structure. Traders may look to psychological round numbers and prior swing lows below $1.00 as potential demand areas, while the current configuration suggests rallies into the aforementioned resistance band could attract sellers.

    Bitcoin, altcoins, stablecoins FAQs

Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, a virtual currency designed to serve as money. This form of payment cannot be controlled by any one person, group, or entity, which eliminates the need for third-party participation during financial transactions.

Altcoins are any cryptocurrency apart from Bitcoin, but some also regard Ethereum as a non-altcoin because it is from these two cryptocurrencies that forking happens. If this is true, then Litecoin is the first altcoin, forked from the Bitcoin protocol and, therefore, an “improved” version of it.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to have a stable price, with their value backed by a reserve of the asset it represents. To achieve this, the value of any one stablecoin is pegged to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US Dollar (USD), with its supply regulated by an algorithm or demand. The main goal of stablecoins is to provide an on/off-ramp for investors willing to trade and invest in cryptocurrencies. Stablecoins also allow investors to store value since cryptocurrencies, in general, are subject to volatility.

Bitcoin dominance is the ratio of Bitcoin’s market capitalization to the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies combined. It provides a clear picture of Bitcoin’s interest among investors. A high BTC dominance typically happens before and during a bull run, in which investors resort to investing in relatively stable and high market capitalization cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. A drop in BTC dominance usually means that investors are moving their capital and/or profits to altcoins in a quest for higher returns, which usually triggers an explosion of altcoin rallies.
