The cryptocurrency market fell roughly 2.18% to $2.62 trillion as Bitcoin dropped below $77,000 and major altcoins including Ethereum, XRP, Shiba Inu and Dogecoin retreated in tandem. The decline followed a hotter-than-expected U.S. producer price index reading, which pushed futures-implied odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 15-16 meeting to approximately 70%. Rising Brent crude prices above $104 a barrel compounded inflation concerns, while more than $190 million in leveraged long positions were liquidated within a single hour. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $46.65 million in net outflows on September 8, ending a three-day inflow streak. Technical analysts are watching the $76,000 to $77,000 band as Bitcoin’s critical near-term support, with a breakdown potentially exposing the $72,800 to $73,000 area.

    Key Elements
Crypto Sell-Off Deepens as Bitcoin Slides Below $77,000 Amid Inflation Fears

A broad retreat swept through digital asset markets as Bitcoin dropped below $77,000, dragging major altcoins lower while traders recalibrated expectations for U.S. monetary policy following hotter-than-anticipated inflation data. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization fell roughly 2.18% to $2.62 trillion, with forced liquidations of leveraged positions and outflows from spot exchange-traded funds amplifying the downward pressure.

Bitcoin traded near $76,987, a decline of approximately 2% over 24 hours, after failing to hold ground above the $80,000 to $81,000 zone it had briefly reclaimed. Ethereum slipped toward $2,470, while XRP changed hands around $1.38. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index retreated to 68, signaling that risk appetite has cooled from earlier exuberance.

The catalyst for the latest leg lower came from Washington, where the August producer price index rose 0.4%, reviving concerns that inflation may prove stickier than policymakers had hoped. Futures markets now assign roughly a 70% probability that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its September 15-16 meeting, up sharply from prior readings. Higher rates tend to strengthen the dollar and Treasury yields, making non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies less attractive.

Energy markets compounded the unease. Brent crude climbed to $104 a barrel, pushing its weekly gain past 10%. Rising oil prices feed directly into broader inflation expectations, reinforcing the case for tighter monetary policy and further pressuring risk assets.

Liquidations and ETF Outflows Accelerate the Slide

The sell-off gained momentum as leveraged traders were forced out of their positions. More than $190 million in long positions were liquidated within a single hour, with Bitcoin accounting for over $112 million of that total. These forced sales create a cascading effect, as automated selling pushes prices lower and triggers additional margin calls.

Institutional demand also showed signs of fatigue. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $46.65 million on September 8, snapping a three-session streak of inflows Spot Ethereum ETFs saw $24.29 million in net outflows over the same period

    Technical Levels Under Scrutiny

Market technicians are watching a narrow band between $76,000 and $77,000 as Bitcoin’s most critical short-term support. The cryptocurrency’s relative strength index has fallen to 55.5, down from overbought territory and below its signal average of 66, indicating fading upward momentum. A decisive break below $76,000 could open the door to the $72,800 to $73,000 range, where more durable buying interest may emerge. On the upside, reclaiming $79,000 would likely set up another attempt at the $80,000 to $82,000 zone.

Ethereum is consolidating after its August surge from $1,900 to above $2,500. The second-largest cryptocurrency now trades at $2,441, with immediate support at $2,362. Analysts view the $2,360 to $2,400 range as essential for preserving the bullish structure established during the August breakout. A daily close below $2,350 could trigger a sharper correction, while a push above $2,560 would clear a path toward $2,600.

XRP finds itself in a delicate position at $1.36 after surrendering much of its August gains. The token’s short-term and long-term moving averages converge around $1.337 and $1.355 respectively, making the $1.33 to $1.36 range a critical battleground. A close below $1.33 could extend losses toward $1.24, while buyers would need to reclaim the $1.40 to $1.42 zone to regain positive momentum.

Shiba Inu faces perhaps the most challenging technical picture among major tokens. The meme coin dropped roughly 3.2% to $0.00000509, breaking below a rising trend line that had been intact since late August. Its RSI has fallen to 48.2, below both the neutral 50 threshold and its signal average of 54.8. Support sits between $0.0000049 and $0.0000050, with a breakdown potentially exposing the August low at $0.0000044.

Dogecoin also traded lower alongside its larger counterparts, though specific price levels were not detailed in available data. The synchronized decline across multiple major cryptocurrencies suggests the move reflects a market-wide shift in sentiment rather than asset-specific developments.

    Whale Behavior and Market Psychology

One analyst characterized large Bitcoin holders as “staying on the sidelines,” describing a posture of waiting rather than active buying or selling. The observation, offered without supporting on-chain data, reflects a broader caution among institutional participants as they await clearer signals from upcoming inflation readings and Federal Reserve communications.

The coming week carries significant event risk. Beyond the Fed’s rate decision and updated economic projections, traders will parse the Consumer Price Index report for confirmation of whether the producer-side inflation surprise extends to consumer prices. Regulatory developments in Washington related to cryptocurrency oversight also remain on the radar for institutional investors.

Asset Current Price Key Support Major Resistance RSI
    Bitcoin (BTC) $77,300 $76,000-$77,000 $80,000-$81,000 55.5
    Ethereum (ETH) $2,441 $2,360-$2,400 $2,500-$2,560 58
    XRP (XRP) $1.36 $1.33-$1.36 $1.45-$1.50 53.5
    Shiba Inu (SHIB) $0.00000509 $0.0000049-$0.0000050 $0.00000565-$0.00000570 48.2

Note: Price levels reflect the most recent trading data available across the four assets discussed in this report.

The confluence of macro headwinds, technical deterioration, and reduced institutional appetite suggests the crypto market may remain under pressure until the Federal Reserve’s policy path becomes clearer. Whether Bitcoin can defend the $76,000 level will likely determine whether this correction remains contained or extends into a deeper drawdown.
