Trading volume on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges (CEXs) has doubled over the past five days, rebounding from a yearly low and exceeding $37 billion. However, even after such a sharp increase, the figure remains well below the 12-month high of $105 billion recorded shortly after the massive liquidations on October 10.
According to The Block, the monthly figures tell a similar story. Trading volume has reached about $490 billion so far in August, compared with $670 billion for all of July. At the same time, centralized exchanges are facing competition from spot cryptocurrency ETFs in the current market cycle. Previously, nearly all direct demand for crypto purchases flowed through CEXs.
The growing popularity of cryptocurrency ETFs and companies building digital asset treasuries could continue to weigh on trading volumes at centralized platforms. Traditional financial instruments give investors access to a broader range of derivatives and strategies while relying on existing stock market infrastructure.
Altcoins drive growth
At the same time, demand for most altcoins remains concentrated on cryptocurrency exchanges. CEXs list new tokens faster, offer a wider range of trading pairs, and provide infrastructure for smaller-cap assets — advantages that ETFs and companies with crypto treasuries are still unable to replicate.
The expansion of decentralized platforms is also putting additional pressure on centralized exchanges. The rapid growth of DEXs such as Hyperliquid and Lighter is gradually drawing some trading volume away from their centralized counterparts.
If the crypto market continues to grow at its current pace, demand could increase across all segments — centralized and decentralized exchanges, as well as traditional financial instruments.
Bitcoin remains the flagship
The rise in trading activity on cryptocurrency exchanges comes alongside a sharp recovery in Bitcoin. On Tuesday, its price climbed above $80,000 and reached around $80,500. The rally began last week, when Bitcoin gained more than 20% in three days — its strongest three-day advance since 2023. One of the drivers was a short squeeze that liquidated more than $4 billion worth of bearish crypto positions.
The return of institutional demand has provided additional support for the market. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $1.92 billion in net inflows last week, their highest weekly total since October. Risk appetite also improved after the U.S. Treasury decided to double purchases of longer-dated government bonds, temporarily pushing yields lower. Against this backdrop, Bitcoin’s price recovery has been accompanied by higher trading volumes both through ETFs and on cryptocurrency exchanges.
Earlier, Japan issued its first crypto exchange license in four years.
