Funds immobilized on-chain as Cronos halts blocks after protocol breach
The Cronos blockchain halted block production on August 30, 2026, after an exploit targeted the Tectonic DeFi lending protocol. The attack involved manipulating the TONIC token as collateral and resulted in an estimated $66–$75 million loss in assets, with most funds trapped on-chain and only $6 million bridged to Ethereum before the halt. Cronos confirmed the incident and stated that user funds on the Crypto.com exchange and app were unaffected, as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
Bullish momentum clashes with longer-term bearish setup near resistance
CRO/USD is trading above both the 20- and 50-day moving averages ($0.05344 and $0.05458), indicating near-term and medium-term support, but remains below the 200-day moving average ($0.06528), reflecting a longer-term bearish alignment. The current price is close to short-term resistance at $0.056, with the 50-day moving average providing support at $0.05458 and the Ichimoku Kijun ($0.05746) serving as additional resistance. Momentum indicators show a constructive bias: RSI stands at 62 (Buy), and MACD, ADX, and CCI all signal Buy, with the HMA trending higher. The Stochastic RSI is in overbought territory at 81, suggesting caution, and BBP above zero indicates buyers are still dominant intraday. The price has retreated to $0.05532, near the daily low, with volatility at 2.89%, highlighting ongoing downward pressure following a downside gap at the open.
Previously it was reported that the Cronos blockchain suffered a major disruption after an exploit targeting the Tectonic DeFi protocol led to significant losses and a full network halt. The latest price action reinforces ongoing downside risks, with the current trading band between $0.05146 and $0.05918 serving as a key range for traders to monitor in the days ahead.
