Crypto-related stocks surged significantly on August 21, as bitcoin extended its rally, putting the digital currency on track to finish the week more than 20% higher. Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOOD) and Coinbase Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN) both climbed in premarket trade, part of a sector-wide rally. The reason can be traced back to a White House meeting earlier that week, when the Trump administration welcomed crypto industry leaders and urged Congress to work on the Clarity Act, which aims to set up clearer government standards for digital assets.
A White House Push for Regulatory Clarity
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Gemini’s Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, executives from Kraken, Ripple, and other prominent organizations, as well as SEC and CFTC heads, were among those in attendance. Trump told reporters that Congress needed to “take the next step” by approving “a fair version” of the Clarity Act, which he called a “very, very powerful structured legislation” that would keep the US “ahead of China” and everyone else in terms of digital asset policy. Trump also stated that the administration had considered plans to buy “sizable” amounts of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, alongside the concept of a strategic reserve.
A Second Tailwind from the Treasury
The Clarity Act push wasn’t the only plus. The surge began earlier, on August 19, when the US Treasury Department said that it would at least double its long-term debt buyback operations, boosting the maximum from $2 billion to at least $4 billion beginning in September. This move signified improving liquidity conditions and eased concerns about tight financing markets, lowering Treasury yields and increasing risk appetite overall, a pattern that tends to benefit assets like bitcoin, which trades as a higher-beta reflection of risk-on mood.
How the Equities are Connected
The read-through for equities that surged alongside bitcoin is straightforward. Coinbase Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN), the largest US-listed cryptocurrency exchange, benefits from both higher token values, which increase trading volumes and custody-fee revenue, and any reduction in regulatory ambiguity, as clearer federal rules would remove a persistent hurdle to its basic business model. Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOOD) benefits similarly from its retail cryptocurrency trading business, which typically sees higher volumes when crypto sentiment becomes substantially positive. Coinbase shares rose roughly 8% in premarket trading following the White House discussion.
