    • India has over 66 million crypto owners but still lacks comprehensive crypto regulations.
    • The US Senate is set to hold a key vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15.
    • The US, EU, Japan, and other countries are moving ahead with digital asset frameworks.

The US crypto market is entering a new phase as the much-awaited CLARITY Act is getting closer to its final vote on September 15. Other countries like the UK, Japan, and South Korea have also established clearer rules for their digital asset spaces. But India, despite its large digital asset user base, is yet to introduce clear crypto regulations. With the crypto community waiting for the CLARITY Act’s passage, India poses the risk of falling behind in the global crypto race.

CLARITY Act Vote on Sept 15, US Crypto Regulation in Focus

All eyes are now on September 15 as the US Senate has scheduled a key vote on the CLARITY Act. Although House Republicans shortened the congressional calendar, the cloture vote remains on the Senate’s schedule. In addition, SEC Chair Paul Atkins has also expressed his optimism that the bill is likely to be passed this month, stating,

“The Clarity Act will be voted on in the Senate on the 15th of September. I anticipate and hope that it will be passed by the Senate and sent ultimately to the President’s desk for a signature.”

Despite existing disagreements among the lawmakers regarding certain provisions of the CLARITY Act, the community largely expects the bill’s passage in September. If the bill passes the Senate, it will then move to President Donald Trump’s desk for final passage. When passed, the law introduces comprehensive crypto regulations, bringing the much-needed clarity to the market.

India Still Awaits Clear Crypto Rules

As CoinEdition reported recently, more than 66 million Indians own cryptocurrencies. This makes the country the largest in crypto adoption, outpacing other global players like the US, UK, and China. Despite this active user base, India is far behind in crypto regulations, while others are actively working to create clear rules and support the growth of their crypto spaces.

India’s crypto regulation is mainly focused on taxation and anti-money laundering rules. The government hasn’t yet introduced clear rules around the broader industry, including exchanges and businesses. The lack of a comprehensive framework is mainly because of the government’s cautious approach to crypto, unlike other countries. This puts the country under severe pressure as other economies are moving ahead with crypto frameworks, competing to attract companies, investment, and talent.

How Other Countries Are Moving Ahead?

In addition to the US, other major countries like the UK, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore are also moving ahead of India in the crypto race. While the US is preparing to launch the CLARITY Act, the European Union has already established the MiCA framework.

Japan is bringing crypto into the existing financial rules. At the same time, South Korea has launched the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Russia, another major global leader, has created a framework for retail crypto trading, whereas the UAE is one of the leading players in crypto regulation.

Could India’s Crypto Regulation Gap Become a Bigger Problem?

Significantly, India’s lack of clear crypto regulations could become a major issue. This mainly arises from the growing competition from other global economies. Only with clear rules will companies be attracted to the country, which could result in significant capital inflow. If the country continues to lag behind in crypto regulations, the country could see businesses, investments, and talent flowing to other nations.

How Can India Catch Up in the Global Crypto Race?

To lead the global crypto space, India needs to have clear crypto regulations. The country could start with comprehensive rules for digital assets, expanding gradually into other major areas like exchanges, businesses, stablecoins, and crypto-related activities. Like other countries, India could also allow the use of crypto for everyday transactions and payments.

If India launches new crypto regulations, entering into the global race, it could make massive changes in the country’s economy. The move could create new opportunities in areas such as fintech, digital payments, custody, compliance, and blockchain development.
