Bitcoin‘s ‘Kimchi Premium’ Persists for a Week

Bitcoin prices on South Korean crypto exchanges have traded roughly 1% above overseas levels for a full week, marking the longest stretch of positive “kimchi premium” since early May. The premium — where Upbit’s won-denominated price exceeds Binance’s dollar quote — is being read as a sign that South Korean retail buying appetite is returning. Bitcoin briefly topped $80,000 last month, and U.S. spot ETFs saw renewed inflows. Analysts caution, however, that spot trading volumes haven’t risen in tandem and South Korea’s share of global volume remains small, suggesting the move reflects easing sell pressure rather than a fresh FOMO-driven rally.

Bitcoin's 'Kimchi Premium' Persists for a Week — Longest Stretch Since May

Bitcoin’s so-called “kimchi premium” — where prices on South Korean exchanges exceed overseas quotes — has now persisted for a full week. It’s the longest positive stretch since early May, raising questions about whether South Korean retail investors’ buying appetite is coming back to life.

According to Bloomberg on the 1st, the won-denominated Bitcoin price on Upbit, operated by Dunamu, traded about 1% above Binance’s dollar quote. Bitcoin has now been more expensive in South Korea than abroad for seven consecutive days — the longest such run in roughly four months.

The kimchi premium refers to the price gap for Bitcoin between South Korean exchanges and overseas markets, and is widely viewed as a gauge of Asian retail investor sentiment. Rachel Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, noted that past episodes of the premium re-emerging have been followed by further Bitcoin price gains.

“South Korean retail investors tend to buy aggressively during risk-on phases, and because of capital controls, that buying pressure shows up as a price gap rather than arbitrage flows,” she said. “Historically, the transition from a discount to a premium has led to stronger returns over the following weeks.”

The premium’s return coincides with Bitcoin entering September trading around the $79,000 level. Last month, Bitcoin briefly topped $80,000 for the first time since May of this year. With optimism returning to the crypto market and the U.S. Treasury announcing an expansion of its long-term bond buyback program, August posted the strongest monthly gain since November 2024.

As prices climbed, money also flowed back into U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The week including the 17th of last month saw inflows of roughly $1.92 billion — the largest in 10 months. Last week brought in another $923 million, though $203 million exited on the 28th, snapping a nine-session streak of net inflows.

Unlike U.S. ETF flows, which reflect institutional demand, the price gap on South Korean exchanges is closely tied to domestic retail buying. Capital controls and financial regulations make rapid arbitrage difficult, which is why the gap tends to persist.

That said, the kimchi premium is easily swayed by speculative fervor and doesn’t guarantee further gains. Markus Thielen, head of 10x Research, said: “The premium turned positive without a corresponding increase in spot trading volume. A significant portion of South Korean investors remain focused on AI-related stocks, so South Korea is unlikely to be a primary driver in the early stages of this Bitcoin rebound.”

Not long ago, the signal coming out of South Korea was the exact opposite. Upbit data shows Bitcoin traded below international prices for most of the summer, with the discount reaching as deep as 3.1% in early June. Last month’s average discount was 0.25%.

With ETF inflows weakening toward the end of last month, some warn that the South Korean market’s move could prove short-lived. “South Korea’s share of global trading volume is still not large,” Lucas said. “This is a small signal that South Korean sell pressure has eased — not a new FOMO phase.” She added: “What moves the price is still U.S. institutions and ETF flows.”
