BitcoinIRA has launched Freedom Accounts, its first taxable cryptocurrency investment product outside the retirement space. The accounts carry no IRA contribution limits, required minimum distributions, or withdrawal restrictions, and allow in-kind transfers of supported digital assets from exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, and Robinhood without triggering a taxable sale. Clients can fund accounts with cash or crypto, access staking on eligible assets, and use the firm’s Crypto Bundles. The launch extends BitcoinIRA beyond the self-directed IRA business it has operated since 2016, when it became the first company to let Americans hold Bitcoin in a self-directed IRA. The firm serves more than 200,000 customers and supports over 100 cryptocurrencies with custody through Digital Trust and BitGo. Freedom Accounts are available now and automatically included with eligible BitcoinIRA accounts, with retirement and taxable holdings managed through a single dashboard.
Key Elements

BitcoinIRA, the company that helped bring cryptocurrency into self-directed retirement accounts a decade ago, is now making a play for investors who want exposure to digital assets without the handcuffs of an IRA.
The Las Vegas-based platform said September 1 that it has rolled out Freedom Accounts, a taxable crypto investment vehicle that carries none of the contribution caps, required minimum distributions, or age-based withdrawal rules that govern retirement products. The launch marks the first time BitcoinIRA has offered a product outside the retirement space, and it lets eligible clients see taxable and retirement crypto holdings side by side in a single dashboard.
At the core of the new offering is an in-kind transfer feature. Users can move supported cryptocurrencies from major exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken, and Robinhood directly into a Freedom Account without first selling the assets, wiring cash, and buying back in. For investors consolidating positions across platforms, that removes a meaningful tax trigger and eliminates the risk of being out of the market during a transfer.
“BitcoinIRA pioneered crypto retirement investing, but our clients’ financial lives don’t stop at their IRA,” said Chris Kline, Co-Founder of BitcoinIRA. “Freedom Accounts are the next step in expanding our platform, giving clients greater flexibility to manage retirement and non-retirement crypto investments in one place. We’re building a more complete digital asset investing experience while maintaining the custody, security and simplicity our clients expect from BitcoinIRA.”
Freedom Accounts can be funded with cash or with supported digital assets moved from external wallets and exchanges. Once assets are in the account, they can be held, traded, or staked where eligible. The product also ties into Crypto Bundles, the firm’s diversified portfolio offering, giving customers a taxable counterpart to the self-directed IRAs BitcoinIRA has offered since 2016, when it became the first company to let Americans hold Bitcoin in a self-directed IRA.
The company now serves more than 200,000 customers and supports over 100 cryptocurrencies with round-the-clock trading. Custody is handled through Digital Trust and BitGo, the institutional-grade providers BitcoinIRA has relied on for its retirement products.

The launch comes as Washington has shown growing openness to digital assets in retirement vehicles, with efforts underway to open 401(k) plans to cryptocurrency. BitcoinIRA’s move positions the company to capture demand from investors who may not want to lock assets into a retirement wrapper but still want a consolidated, custody-backed platform for managing digital asset exposure.
Freedom Accounts are available now and are automatically included with eligible BitcoinIRA accounts. The company said the new accounts are designed to complement, not replace, its retirement products. While Crypto IRAs retain the tax advantages of qualified accounts, the taxable alternative offers flexibility for everyday digital-asset investing without the administrative constraints that come with retirement savings rules.
