In a <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/<a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/gold-and-bitcoin-are-hedges-but-why-is-a-stablecoin-company-buying-farmland/” title=”Gold and Bitcoin Are Hedges, But Why Is a Stablecoin Company Buying Farmland?”>bitcoin-must-reclaim-this-level-soon-or-risk-slide-toward-50k-analyst/” title=”Bitcoin Must Reclaim This Level Soon or Risk Slide Toward $50K: Analyst”>Bitcoin forum post dated Sep. 7, 2010, reposted 16 years later, BTC▲$62,630.00 mining economics in that year are described. According to the poster TTBit, a miner would take on average 338 hours to mine a block and pay 5.68 dollars for electricity, making the miner “a net loser”.

This assumes a 140-watt computer running around the clock for two weeks, which would consume approximately 47.33 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, which at $0.12 per kWh would cost $5.68. However, while the math is correct, that does not mean that the cost of mining 50 BTC is constant.

Bitcoin mining was already probabilistic: TTBit’s time of 338 hours was an expectation based on a hash rate of 2.2 megahashes per second and the network difficulty at the time. For the miner, a block could be found a minute after them, much later, or not at all.

This does not include equipment, cooling, connectivity, and other costs. Pooling computing power in mining pools helped to reduce the variance of payouts, but not the underlying expected return economics of mining.

In 2010, things were different: The Bitcoin protocol still offered a 50 BTC subsidy as a reward for each valid block, and the market itself was less deep and standardized.

Historical pricing information is inconsistent due to limited trade volumes on smaller exchanges and peer-to-peer deals, but public records indicate the price was consistently below $1 throughout 2010. Low liquidity at the time also made it difficult to convert the large prize into cash.

If Bitcoin were worth $78,810 per Bitcoin on September 8, 2026, 50 Bitcoins would be worth about $3.94 million dollars. With that said, Bitcoin miners in 2010 may not have been able to sell them for that price. However, today the block subsidy is only a fraction of this, as it was halved from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC in April 2024.

Additionally, the long-standing discussion foreshadowed the beginning of the arms race: TTBit got 2,200 kilohashes per second with a CPU and 25,000 kilohashes per second with graphics cards, and another user got around 33 000 kilohashes per second with an Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card, showing the transition from home CPU to GPU.

GPUs were later replaced with FPGAs, and later ASICs designed specifically for SHA-256. As of 8 September 2026, the total Bitcoin network hashrate is estimated to be around 966 EH/s — 439 trillion times greater than TTBit’s machine.

The basic equation remains, with the difficulty retargeting every 2016 blocks to achieve an average of 10 minutes per block, and profitability determined by factors such as Bitcoin price, fees, cost of electricity, efficiency, and competition in the network. The next halving should bring the subsidy down to 1.5625 BTC around 2028.

TTBit warned in 2010 that coin generation would become “quite difficult” if further development continued. While the technology and scale have changed dramatically, the question remains: Is the expected coin output greater than the real electricity bill of creating it?
