Aave(AAVE) controls roughly 42% to 48% of top-ten active DeFi loans as V4 targets billions of dollars in underused liquidity.

    Key Points:

    • Aave’s active loans climbed from about $11.1 billion to $12.5 billion in August, with its loan book later reaching roughly $12.7 billion.
    • The protocol has about $30 billion supplied against $12.7 billion borrowed, leaving substantial liquidity available for new demand.
    • V4 aims to connect fragmented liquidity through shared hubs, while Horizon extends lending toward tokenized Treasuries and credit funds.

    Aave Lending Lead

Aave added more than $1.5 billion in active loans over the past 30 days, a move that indicated borrowers were returning at scale rather than simply shifting activity among smaller lenders. Borrowing accelerated after Aug. 20.

Its loan book reached about $12.7 billion, nearly matching the combined $13 billion to $14 billion held across nine competing protocols and underscoring the gap between Aave and the rest of the market.

DeFiLlama data put the Morpho protocol at $4.81 billion in active loans, while Aave held roughly 42% to 48% of top-ten active loans. Most rivals remained below $2 billion.

    V4 Liquidity Plan

Aave also has room to grow without matching every new loan with fresh deposits, because about $30 billion is supplied against $12.7 billion borrowed, leaving roughly $17 billion available. V4 addresses the existing fragmentation in V3 by connecting liquidity through shared hubs, which can let underused funds support borrowing elsewhere.

The liquidity is already available. If the structure works as intended, Aave could raise utilization and potentially increase revenue without requiring deposit growth to keep pace with every increase in borrowing.

Horizon adds another route for expansion by bringing tokenized Treasuries and credit funds into lending, although its deposits remain in the hundreds of millions.

In August, active loans began near $11.1 billion and reached about $12.5 billion, with the sharpest increase coming after Aug. 20 as borrowing moved above $12 billion.
