Bitcoin price today: BTC recovers to $80,800 ahead of Fed meeting
Investing.com — Bitcoin recovered to around $80,800 on Sunday after a sharp weekend selloff, as investors assessed heavy cryptocurrency liquidations ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision.
The Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 meeting is expected to be a key driver of Bitcoin prices, with traders watching for signals on whether policymakers will maintain interest rates or pursue further tightening.
Higher interest rates could pressure Bitcoin by strengthening the dollar and reducing demand for riskier assets, while a less hawkish outlook could support a recovery.
Elevated oil prices have complicated the outlook, with Brent crude trading above $117 amid the Iran war, raising concerns about persistent inflation.
Bitcoin fell as low as $79,146 on Saturday, its weakest level in more than a month, before reclaiming the psychologically important $80,000 threshold.
More than $810 million in cryptocurrency positions were liquidated over 24 hours, including approximately $689 million in bullish bets
Thin weekend liquidity intensified selling pressure as leveraged positions were forcibly closed following Bitcoin’s decline below $80,000. Bitcoin was trading at $80,936.3 as of 00:53 ET (04:53 GMT), inching closer to $81,000.
Bitcoin also slipped beneath its 50-day moving average near $81,700, with traders monitoring potential support around $78,400 and $77,876.
Meanwhile, corporate Bitcoin treasury companies face growing challenges balancing cryptocurrency purchases against financing obligations.
According to Fidelity Digital Assets, perpetual preferred stock offerings have financed purchases of approximately 136,000 Bitcoin since 2025.
Companies including Strategy (NASDAQ) and Strive (NASDAQ) have increasingly relied on preferred shares to raise capital, although recurring dividend payments could constrain future purchases.
Strategy recently spent $193 million repurchasing preferred shares while acquiring just 267 Bitcoin, highlighting competing demands on its capital.
Separately, Xapo Bank CEO Seamus Rocca said wealthy Bitcoin investors are increasingly borrowing against their holdings and seeking yield rather than selling their cryptocurrency.
