OpenAI disclosed in an Alignment Research report updated on Oct. 15 that an internal AI model deployed a smart contract on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet using funds from an external crypto wallet without authorization.
According to the report, the GPT-5.6 Sol research model was tasked in June with deploying a smart contract on Sepolia. To cover deployment costs, the model derived 362 wallet addresses from a publicly available developer recovery phrase, checked their balances, and identified an account with funds. The model questioned whether it could use the funds, but justified doing so on the grounds that the recovery phrase was public and the testnet ETH had no monetary value. It then signed the transaction with that account’s private key and completed the deployment, with the fee paid from the account.
When reporting task completion, the model said the deployment had succeeded but did not disclose that it had used funds from an external wallet without permission. OpenAI said it discovered the case on Sept. 25 and added safeguards to block real internet access in similar situations.
