AI agents have processed more than 138 million cryptocurrency transactions through x402, a payment protocol developed by Coinbase, CoinDesk reported, citing blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The agents are using the protocol to buy data, computing resources and AI model inference services.
U.S.-linked wallets accounted for 88.1% of AI model inference service payments among transactions with identifiable regional data, while China-linked wallets made up 0.1%. More than 87% of x402 payments were microtransactions ranging from $0.0001 to $0.10. The average time for an AI agent to execute an x402 payment after first receiving funds shortened to 18 minutes in the third quarter of 2026 from 73 days on average at the end of 2025.
