X began rolling out a Trade option in Cashtags across the United States on September 15, routing orders to partners Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo so trades execute on those CEXs and broker platforms rather than on X itself; the pilot generated roughly $1 billion in global trading volume within the first three days. The move creates a large crypto on-ramp and distribution channel that could boost adoption and trading flows for listed tokens, but its long-term impact depends on supported-asset lists, revenue-sharing terms, expansion beyond the U.S. and regulatory limits.
See what traders are focused on
The social network X has begun rolling out a “Trade” option across its Cashtags feature in the United States, letting users route orders to outside brokerages and exchanges directly from an asset’s ticker page. The company announced the Cashtag Partner Program on September 15, naming Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase as its launch partners. X, formerly Twitter, has teased trading tools for more than a year without committing to a full rollout. The move turns the platform’s stock and cryptocurrency ticker shortcuts into a distribution channel for regulated trading venues, its most direct step yet toward in-app investing.
How Cashtag Trading Works
Cashtags are the dollar-prefixed ticker symbols — $BTC, $ETH and $TSLA among them — that X converts into links to a price chart and a feed of related posts. Under the new program, tapping a supported Cashtag surfaces a “Trade” button that sends the user to a participating partner to complete the order. X does not execute transactions itself; trades are finished inside the partner’s mobile app or web platform. Users who tap a Cashtag first see a price chart and related posts, then decide whether to route the trade onward. That design keeps the company outside regulated brokerage activity while capturing the trading intent that already flows through the platform’s finance and crypto discussion.
Crypto Exchanges Anchor the Partner List
The launch lineup is weighted toward digital assets. Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini join Interactive Brokers and Moomoo, giving users a bridge to both crypto and traditional equity venues. X said the pilot behind the program generated roughly $1 billion in global trading volume within its first three days, a figure the company framed as evidence of pent-up demand. The rollout builds on earlier groundwork: the platform previously added built-in crypto and stock price tracking and later teased crypto-aware “Smart Cashtags” as an evolution of the feature.
A New On-Ramp for Retail Traders
For crypto markets, the program is a distribution win: a mainstream social network now steers users toward regulated exchanges at the moment they check a token’s price. It also sharpens the contrast with the platform’s earlier run of unregulated token speculation, which X’s own product leadership has warned against. Whether the early volume holds remains an open question — the company has not disclosed revenue-sharing terms, supported-asset limits or a timeline for expanding the program beyond the United States. It also positions the platform as a potential gateway for first-time crypto buyers who already follow market chatter on its timeline.
