Coinbase has reversed one of its biggest consumer crypto rebrands. Just over a year after transforming Coinbase Wallet into the Base App, the company is bringing the Coinbase Wallet name back and refocusing the product around trading. Apparently, its ambitious “everything crypto app” experiment did not work as planned.

But Coinbase is not shutting the wallet down or abandoning Base. Instead, it is separating two platforms that became increasingly difficult to merge: Base as blockchain infrastructure and Coinbase Wallet as a self-custodial trading product.

What Happened to the Base App?

On September 10, Coinbase announced that the Base App is becoming Coinbase Wallet again.

The reversal comes about 14 months after Coinbase unveiled the Base App on July 16, 2025. At the time, the company described the change as much more than a new name.

Coinbase Wallet was supposed to evolve into an “everything app.” Trading remained part of the product, but Coinbase also added a decentralized social feed, creator monetization, encrypted messaging, mini-app discovery, payments, and onchain identity.

The idea was to make the wallet a consumer gateway to the entire Base ecosystem. However, the renamed Coinbase Wallet will now concentrate on self-custody, trading, and access to onchain markets across multiple networks.

Why Did Coinbase Launch the Base App?

    The original strategy was ambitious.

Coinbase had already built Base into one of Ethereum’s largest Layer 2 networks. The next challenge was finding a consumer interface capable of bringing ordinary users into that ecosystem.

The Base App was intended to solve that problem.

Instead of asking users to separately install a wallet, discover decentralized applications, join an onchain social network, and find trading tools, Coinbase wanted to put everything into one application.

    • Crypto trading
    • Social feeds
    • Creator content
    • Messaging
    • Mini-apps
    • USDC▼$0.9998 payments
    • Self-custody
    • Onchain identity

Coinbase essentially wanted Base to become both infrastructure and a consumer internet brand. That was where the experiment became difficult.

What Went Wrong With the Base App?

The clearest answer came from Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong himself.

In March 2026, Armstrong said the social experiment “didn’t quite work.” He explained that the company had already begun shifting the app toward trading and toward becoming a self-custodial version of Coinbase’s main application.

That admission revealed the central problem.

Users already understood what Coinbase Wallet was for: holding assets, accessing DeFi, connecting to apps, and trading onchain.

The Base App asked them to understand something much broader and less clearly defined. Was Base a blockchain? A wallet? A social network? A creator platform? A payment system? An app store?

For a product designed to make crypto simpler, the branding arguably made the product harder to explain.

    Why the SocialFi Experiment Struggled

The biggest retreat is from the social-first vision.

When Coinbase introduced the Base App, it described decentralized social media as a central part of the product. Users could post content, follow creators, discover assets through their feed, chat, and potentially earn directly from their activity.

The problem was not necessarily that those features were technically impossible.

The harder question was whether users actually wanted their crypto wallet to become a social network.

Social products depend heavily on network effects. A feed becomes useful because the people and creators users care about are already there. Coinbase was therefore competing indirectly with X, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, Discord, and established crypto communities for attention.

Trading had a much clearer reason to exist inside the wallet. Coinbase eventually followed that demand.

Did Creator Coins Hurt the Base App Strategy?

They appear to have contributed to the broader retreat from SocialFi.

Base experimented aggressively with creator-oriented onchain assets during 2025 and early 2026. The thesis was that creators could monetize attention directly, while users could participate financially in online culture.

But many of those assets behaved more like speculative tokens than durable creator economies.

Prices could surge around attention and then collapse quickly. That created tension between the idea of building sustainable online communities and the reality of highly volatile markets.

The Base App failed because the weakness of SocialFi made the trading use case look increasingly stronger by comparison.

Why Is Coinbase Bringing Coinbase Wallet Back?

Because “Coinbase Wallet” tells users exactly what the product is.

The renewed product strategy is much more straightforward: Coinbase Wallet is the self-custodial counterpart to the centralized Coinbase application.

Users keep control of their own keys but gain access to a wider range of onchain assets and markets than Coinbase’s regulated exchange can necessarily list.

Ryan Kass, Coinbase’s Head of Wallet Product, described the wallet as a kind of “test kitchen” for products and assets that may not yet be available through the centralized exchange.

That positioning gives Coinbase Wallet a distinct purpose.

The Base App tried to become many things simultaneously. Coinbase Wallet can focus on one: becoming a powerful gateway to onchain trading.

What Can the New Coinbase Wallet Trade?

The new direction is much broader than conventional token swaps.

Coinbase says the wallet is moving toward trading:

    • Crypto tokens
    • Memecoins
    • Perpetual futures
    • Prediction markets
    • Tokenized stocks

The wallet also supports more than ten blockchain networks, including newer ecosystems such as Monad and Robinhood Chain.

Coinbase’s message is increasingly simple: if an asset or market exists onchain, the wallet should make it easier to access.

Some products remain restricted geographically, and regulatory requirements still determine what individual users can access.

    Is Coinbase Wallet Still Self-Custodial?

The rebrand does not turn Coinbase Wallet into the company’s centralized exchange.

Users still control their own wallets and keys. Coinbase Wallet can discover assets across supported networks without requiring those assets to receive a traditional Coinbase exchange listing.

Coinbase says malicious and scam tokens can be automatically hidden, while newer product categories undergo additional product and compliance review before they appear in the interface.

That creates an important distinction. Coinbase.com remains the regulated centralized marketplace. Coinbase Wallet is becoming the more open self-custodial gateway to onchain markets.

    What Happens to Base Now?

    Base itself is not disappearing.

Jesse Pollak, the creator of Base, said the name will now refer to the blockchain and its wider ecosystem rather than Coinbase’s consumer wallet.

That may actually make the brand clearer.

Base can focus on becoming infrastructure for trading, payments, stablecoins, and onchain financial applications. Coinbase Wallet can become one of the major applications using that infrastructure.

Pollak said the wallet will continue highlighting Base assets, markets, and apps.

In other words, ending the Base App branding does not mean Coinbase is retreating from Base. It separates the chain from the consumer product built on top of it.

What Happened to the Old Coinbase Wallet?

The product transition had already begun before the latest name reversal.

Coinbase closed the classic wallet experience on August 15, 2026, replacing it with the newer architecture.

The transition also reduced support for several networks previously available in the classic wallet, including Dogecoin, Litecoin, XRP▼$1.34, Stellar, zkSync Era, and a number of smaller chains.

Users did not lose ownership of those assets. They could still recover them through compatible wallets using their recovery phrase.

That change showed that Coinbase was already simplifying the product architecture even while the Base App name remained. The September rebrand simply makes the strategic shift explicit.

Was the Base App a Failure?

As a branding and social-product experiment, largely yes.

Coinbase itself has effectively acknowledged that the social-first strategy did not produce the desired result.

But the underlying engineering was not necessarily wasted.

The project helped Coinbase rebuild its wallet around smart accounts, easier onboarding, sponsored network fees, trading, payments, and deeper Base integration. Several of those technologies remain part of the current product.

So the company is abandoning the “everything app” positioning rather than throwing away everything built during the experiment.

    That is an important distinction.

    Why Trading Won

Trading has one major advantage over SocialFi: users already come to crypto wallets to trade.

Coinbase does not need to convince them that this behavior belongs inside the product.

The wallet can also offer markets that are difficult to bring immediately onto Coinbase’s centralized exchange. That potentially gives the self-custodial product a faster innovation cycle.

Perpetual futures, prediction markets, tokenized equities, newly launched tokens, and emerging chains all fit naturally into this strategy.

Coinbase can then learn from activity in the wallet before deciding what belongs inside its more regulated centralized products.

This gives the revived Coinbase Wallet a much clearer product engine than the Base App ever had.

What Does the Rebrand Mean for Coinbase?

The reversal shows that Coinbase is willing to abandon a major branding decision relatively quickly when user behavior points elsewhere.

It also reveals a broader shift in the company’s consumer strategy.

Coinbase spent much of 2025 trying to turn crypto wallets into social applications. In 2026, it increasingly appears to believe that onchain finance itself is the stronger consumer product.

Now Base becomes financial infrastructure, while Coinbase Wallet becomes the self-custodial trading interface and Coinbase remains the centralized exchange. That structure is much easier to understand than asking one Base App to represent all three.

Final Verdict: What Went Wrong With the Base App?

The Base App suffered from an identity problem.

Coinbase took a product people already understood—a crypto wallet—and tried to transform it simultaneously into a social network, creator economy, messaging platform, payment app, app-discovery layer, and trading terminal.

The social experiment failed to gain enough traction, while trading remained the obvious core use case.

Coinbase has now followed the stronger signal. The new strategy is narrower, but probably stronger: let Base be the blockchain, and let Coinbase Wallet be the place where users trade on it—and everywhere else.

Coinbase announced on September 10, 2026, that the Base App is being renamed Coinbase Wallet again, reversing the July 2025 rebrand.

Why Is Coinbase Abandoning the Base App Name?

The app’s social and “everything app” strategy did not work as expected. Coinbase is refocusing the product on self-custodial trading and multichain market access.

    Is Base App Shutting Down?

No. The underlying wallet continues as Coinbase Wallet. Users retain their self-custodial accounts and assets.

Is Coinbase Abandoning the Base Blockchain?

No. Base remains a major Coinbase-supported blockchain ecosystem. The change separates the Base blockchain brand from the Coinbase Wallet consumer product.

What Can Coinbase Wallet Trade Now?

Coinbase Wallet is expanding beyond ordinary crypto swaps to include products such as memecoins, perpetual futures, prediction markets, tokenized stocks, and assets across more than ten supported blockchain networks.
