Bitcoin‘s (BTC) next major move is likely to depend more on Treasury yields and oil prices than another inflation surprise, analysts said, after August CPI data did little to materially change expectations for the Federal Reserve’s September meeting.

The market largely absorbed the report as expected, with headline inflation rising 0.4% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier. Core CPI rose 0.3% on the month and 2.4% year on year. The monthly core reading was slightly hotter than expected, but the annual figure eased from 2.5%.

Bitcoin initially fell toward $76,500 following the release before recovering toward $78,000. The muted reaction suggests traders are now looking beyond the inflation print itself and toward the broader financial conditions that could determine whether the cryptocurrency can sustain its recovery.

The key question heading into next week’s Federal Reserve meeting is whether a potential 25-basis-point rate increase will be treated as a one-off move or the start of a prolonged tightening cycle.

Treasury Yields Could Matter More Than The CPI Headline

Treasury yields have emerged as a critical signal for Bitcoin because they determine how markets price future monetary policy and the cost of capital across risk assets.

Lacie Zhang, research analyst at Bitget Wallet, said Bitcoin’s recovery would likely require Treasury yields and oil prices to stabilize alongside continued spot Bitcoin ETF inflows.

Markus Levin, co-founder of XYO, made a similar argument, saying investors should watch Treasury yields more closely than the CPI headline from here. He expects the Federal Reserve to deliver one 25-basis-point hike in September and then pause rather than begin a sustained tightening cycle.

That distinction could become more important than the September decision itself.

A rate increase that markets already expect may have limited additional impact on Bitcoin if Treasury yields remain contained. A shift toward expectations for multiple further hikes would create a much stronger headwind for the asset.

Oil Prices Add A Second Inflation Risk

Oil is becoming the other major variable for markets because another sustained rise in energy prices could keep inflation pressures elevated even if core price growth continues to moderate.

Brent crude recently approached $110 a barrel amid geopolitical tensions before easing from those highs. That move has added another layer of uncertainty for central banks that are already balancing persistent inflation against concerns over economic growth.

For Bitcoin, the risk is indirect but important. Higher oil prices can reinforce expectations for tighter monetary policy, pushing yields higher and reducing the appeal of speculative assets.

Zhang said the latest Bitcoin rebound could remain a relief move without stabilization in both oil and Treasury yields.

The setup means Bitcoin could face pressure even without a fresh upside surprise in CPI if energy markets trigger another repricing of the Fed’s policy path.

Bitcoin Needs More Than A September Fed Pause

The latest inflation report has not eliminated the case for a September rate hike.

Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, said the CPI release left the Fed decision genuinely unresolved because the figures were broadly in line with expectations rather than clearly hawkish or dovish.

That leaves policymakers weighing inflation that remains elevated against a labor market that has shown enough resilience to complicate the case for aggressive easing.

The more important question for crypto markets is what happens after September.

Levin expects the Fed to hike once and then pause. That would potentially allow financial conditions to stabilize if investors become more confident that the tightening cycle is nearing its end.

A shift in expectations toward more hikes would produce the opposite effect and could push Bitcoin back into a more prolonged period of weakness.

ETF Demand Could Determine Whether Bitcoin Holds $78,000

Institutional flows provide another important test of whether Bitcoin can absorb tighter financial conditions.

Zhang said continued spot Bitcoin ETF inflows would be needed alongside stable yields and oil prices for a sustained recovery. Without that combination, the recent rebound may not develop into a broader trend.

Bitcoin’s immediate technical levels are now relatively clear. Zhang identified the $75,000 to $76,000 area as near-term support and $80,000 as the first significant upside test.

Lewis Huang, an analyst at Bitget, said Bitcoin holding above roughly $76,270 would indicate that underlying demand remains resilient despite uncertainty over the rate path.

That leaves Bitcoin facing a market where the next catalyst may not come from another inflation number.

Instead, traders will be watching whether Treasury yields stabilize, oil prices retreat further and ETF demand return strongly enough to absorb the pressure from higher-for-longer interest rate expectations.
