Bitcoin ETFs just had their biggest single day since January while XRP and Ether funds slowed sharply, and analysts are calling it a rotation. But the price action tells a completely different story.

Bitcoin spot ETFs, the funds that hold the coin directly and trade like a stock, took in $731 million on September 3, their biggest day since January 14 In the week to September 5,XRP spot ETFstook in $19 million, down 83% from $110.5 million the week before

Together, those figures suggest money is leaving XRP for Bitcoin. But the Bitcoin price trades at $79,812 as of September 6, the XRP price at $1.41, and XRP is up 39% over the past month against Bitcoin’s 23%. So would a slower week for XRP’s funds and one big day for Bitcoin’s add up to a rotation?

What the Bitcoin ETF Flow Data Shows

The $731 million day on September 3 was part of three straight weeks of net inflows to Bitcoin spot ETFs, $3.8 billion in total, which is the strongest three-week run of 2026. But BlackRock’siShares Bitcoin Trust (NASDAQ:IBIT) took $454 million of that total, with ARK’s ARKB adding $138 million and Fidelity’s FBTC $74 million, so one fund accounted for more than 60% of the day.

However, Bitcoin spot ETFs have still lost about $1 billion net since January 1, and the funds haven’t made it back even after three strong weeks. The funds took in $174.6 million on September 4, less than a quarter of what came in on September 3, and the Bitcoin price fell to $79,700 that day anyway.

What the XRP and Ether ETF Flow Data Shows

Ethereum(CRYPTO:ETH) spot ETFs took in $218.4 million in the week to September 5 against $824.4 million the week before, a 74% drop that matched XRP’s. Both funds still took in more money than they paid out that week, and both are ahead for the year, Ether’s by about $863 million and XRP’s by about $515 million since January 1.

Meanwhile, the XRP price climbed 4% in the seven days to September 6 and Ether rose 30% in the 30 days to September 6, so the coins whose funds took in the least are also the coins that outran Bitcoin over the month.

Why a Slower Inflow Is Not an Outflow

A slower rate of inflows is still an inflow. XRP and Ether ETFs took in less money in the week to September 5 than the week before, but none of it left, and a fund that takes in $19 million has not lost money. People calling it a rotation are treating a smaller number as a negative one.

However, ETF flow data only counts the money that goes through the funds. Most crypto buying happens on exchanges and never touches an ETF, so ETF inflows drop when buyers go quiet and also when they buy the coin on an exchange instead. The XRP price rose 4% in the seven days to September 6, the week its funds took in less, and a coin that money is leaving doesn’t rise 4%.

What Would Turn It Into a Rotation

Two things would have to happen in the flow data, and neither has yet. The first is that XRP and Ether ETFs would have to post net outflow days, meaning more money leaving than coming in, and more than once. A week where those funds give money back would signal that institutional buyers are stepping away.

The second is that Bitcoin spot ETFs would have to turn positive for the year. The funds have taken in $55.6 billion since they launched and hold $101.3 billion in assets, but they’re still negative for 2026. A three-week streak that leaves the funds in negative territory for the year only shows that they are recovering, so a rotation would mean Bitcoin ETFs posting a net positive annual figure.

Is Money Moving From XRP to Bitcoin?

The flow data probably isn’t showing a rotation, because Bitcoin ETFs had one big day driven mostly by one fund while XRP and Ether ETFs kept taking in money at a slower rate. If money were leaving XRP for Bitcoin, XRP’s funds would be paying out, and they aren’t.

So if you hold XRP or Ether and the 83% drop worries you, the funds still took in $19 million in the week to September 5. XRP ETFs could post a week where money leaves, and a week like that would be new information. Until they do, the XRP price is up 39% over the past month and its funds are still taking in money, and a coin that money is leaving doesn’t do either of those.
