Bitcoin-Focused Company Metaplanet Transfers Hundreds of Bitcoin (BTC) to Coinbase! Is a Sell-Off Coming? Here Are the Details
Metaplanet, a Japan-based Bitcoin-focused company, has made headlines in the cryptocurrency market with a recent Bitcoin transfer. According to data from the on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain dated August 31st, the company sent a total of 2,400 Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime within the last three hours. The total value of the transferred Bitcoins at the time of the transaction was estimated to be approximately $186 million.
Metaplanet’s transfer to Coinbase Prime was one of the company’s recent transactions involving a large amount of Bitcoin. According to the data, the 2,400 BTC are part of a portfolio of approximately 43,000 Bitcoin that the company previously acquired at an average cost of $96,191. The total value of these assets is estimated to be around $3.48 billion.
Large-scale Bitcoin transfers are closely monitored by the market, especially when involving institutional investors and companies holding Bitcoin reserves. The transfer of crypto assets to centralized exchanges or exchange institutional trading platforms can be interpreted as preparation for potential sales. However, since institutional services like Coinbase Prime can also be used for custody, liquidity management, and various operational purposes, it cannot be directly concluded that the transfer constitutes a sale.
Metaplanet stands out as one of the most notable institutional investors placing Bitcoin at the center of its corporate reserves. The company is growing its crypto asset reserves through regular Bitcoin purchases, viewing this strategy as a long-term treasury management approach.
Following the latest transfer, market participants began watching how the Bitcoins in question would be used on Coinbase Prime. It is thought that if the assets are sold, this could create additional supply and selling pressure in the Bitcoin market. Conversely, it is also possible that the transfers were solely for institutional custody or liquidity management purposes.
Metaplanet’s subsequent on-chain movements could provide important clues as to whether the company is continuing its Bitcoin accumulation strategy and whether it is divesting a portion of its current holdings.
